Description
Joseph Holt is a unique brewery: it embodies both traditional values and exceptional brewing. For more than 160 years the company has not only created and developed award winning beer, but also served the community of which it forms a part of. It has built sustainable jobs and worked with charities to deliver substantial benefits to people living in the brewery’s area of operations and beyond.
Established in 1849, Joseph Holt Ltd has been managed by its founding family for five generations. Throughout that time the company has been driven by traditions of professionalism, honesty and innovation. So the business, although rooted in the traditional values of a family firm with a reputation built on traditional draft and bottled beer, has always looked to evolve. The most recent developments in that evolution are the Crystal and Diamond range of lagers and the Golden Ale Two Hoots. These products join the collection of award winning lagers and excellent Smooth and Black keg beer.
The brewery has an established pub estate that is carefully managed to ensure that it is focused on growth.

500ml bottle from Booths, Knutsford. Copper colour with thin beige head. Some hay hop, some rose petal aroma. The best thing about this beer is that I drank it watching series II of Absolutely, the Scottish/Welsh sketch show from the early 1990’s. Beer has candy sugar, some pear drop hop on finish. Otherwise a bit empty. Pear drop aromatic bitter is fine. Didn’t get any of the promised oak.

500ml from Booths. Very deep chestnut colour with lasting thick beige head. Some yeast, some hop on aroma. Malt is weird because of the pasteurisation. Has decent malt, but a bit empty. Malt makes it drinkable, but still not all there

Formerly known as Celebration Ale, this one is available both on cask and in bottle. During two drinking weeks in England I had two half; at The Market Porter, London and at The Trafford Arms in Norwich. Both served in well kept condition.
Has got a dark amber colour with only a tiny little white head. Sweet hoppy aroma and caramelly malt sweetness in flavour. Hard to detect any bitterness (15.09 and 24.09.2006).

(Cask at Hare & Hounds, Manchester, 28 July) Colour is dark brown with tawny notes, firm off-white head. Nose is malty and nutty with fruity notes of dark cherries. Taste is malty and nutty (almond) with notes of cherries and a rather dry finish with notes of dusty hops. Well balanced and tasty.

Bottle at blind tasting. Copper, clear colour with thin white head. Caramel aroma, sweetish and toffeeish. Sweetish, strong English bitter. Pasteurised I think, but still nice enough.

Bottle from Morrisons 20-04-06. Amber colour, this really is quite bitter and hoppy and rather good, suprised at the ABV as it doesn’t taste this strong.

Cask at Simple Simons, Canterbury Golden beer with citric nose and a bit of herbs. The honey gives it a slightly sweet feel and it definitely has a bit of a herby edge. OK but didn’t deserve a second pint
