Hoppy Belgian ale by 't Duo, steinie bottle from Willems in Grobbendonk. Very agressive gusher, with beer spouting out of the bottle neck even with careful opening - impossible to open without considerable loss, something I passionately hate, so this is clearly not a good start. Anyway: typical 'gusher head', initially filling the glass with a towering high, egg-white foam but quickly collapsing into an irregular ring of off-white moussy with some 'dots' in the middle, on a milky straw-yellow blonde beer, like a home made pineapple juice or something, turning into a 'dirty' greenish-tinged murky ochre with sediment - and after the last remainders of the head are gone, looking decidedly unattractive. Aroma of a lot of yellow grapefruit flesh, cucumber, pumpkin flesh, lemon zest, sourdough, milk gone sour, mandarin peel, damp hay, cold camomile tea, kimchi, horseradish, citrus-flavoured children's medicine, sweaty feet, raw dough. Estery onset, a wild array of flavours reminiscent of pineapple, green banana, starfruit, yellow plum and green apple, with a certain 'dirtiness' already apparent at the beginning - clearly the result of some bacterial infection; sweet core with a sourish edge, with a notable citrusy aspect to it. Fizzy and minerally carb, soapy and slick mouthfeel; soggy old bread pulp-like malt base, the breadiness increased by considerable - again - 'dirty' yeastiness. Hop bitterness grows on it, but remains of a remarkably fresh, citrus peel-like nature and never gets too harsh; its delicate citrusy aromas, however, are unsurprisingly marred by an overt yeastiness, including a ton of obnoxious spicy and ethereal phenols. Juicy-bittering ending, very estery, but also very dirty and phenolic, with an underlying 'bacterial' sourishness, almost lactic in nature, distracting from the, in all, quite colourful and pleasantly citrusy hoppiness that went in here. Something very obviously went wrong with this beer, and in spite of all its good and innovative intentions, it comes out as a dirty and unmanageable mess, I didn't even finish it, which says a lot in my case. Duo has done a lot better than this!

Now here's something different, at least to Belgian standards: a Berliner Weisse with Citra (in cryohops form) and Wai-Iti, a very expressive modern New Zealand variety... Sounds like some Scandinavian designer beer, but actually comes from 't Duo in Putte southeast of Antwerp. Opens with a menacing hissing sound, but contrary to my expectations, does not gush. Does form a very bubbly, high, coarse, foamy, egg-white head, but very irregular, very large-bubbled and very unstable, collapsing to shreds of loose bubbles in instants; immediately cloudy lemon juice yellow blonde with deeper ochre hue. Very expressive, powerful aroma of lime sorbet, lemon candy, Fanta Zero Pink Pomelo or something alike, stale sweat, pineapple yoghurt, crushed fresh woodsorrel leaves, homemade apple juice, ripe apricot, sourdough, gypsum, green apple, withering sorrel leaves, bread crumbs, turnip tops, old potato note. Very brisk onset, lemony sourness but nothing too puckering or acidic, lots of lime sorbet, raw pineapple and green apple flavours, hint of unripe banana, spritzy carbonation, very minerally and lively; the ongoing lactic sourness is quite sharp and 'active' in drying the palate, while this crisp green apple and lime aspect continues over a softly bready and very soapy wheat backbone. Ends dry, very dry even, due to a combination of the sourness with an admittedly gentle, drying, citric and zesty hoppiness, which provides more retronasal aroma than actual bitterness; again the lime factor is accentuated, with a fresh sour 'plant'-like note to it. Very chalky aspect too, a bit too much so in combination with the wheaty soapiness, but in any case this typifies the style, as I came to experience in many instances. Some lingering orange flesh-like sweetness at the back too, but it's the lime-like sourness and that very explicit chalkiness that keep dominating. Wow, didn't see this one coming... At least very original and 'international' for what I am used to here in conservative Belgium, very expressive and in-your-face, daring and fun to drink, with highly refreshing qualities - a welcome alcoholic soda pop on a hot summer night like this. Could do with more head retention and less of that very minerally chalkiness, but otherwise a pleasant surprise and a welcome distraction in an evening of solely Belgian beers, but definitely non-Belgian in style and intention, in spite of the thoroughly Flemish name. Berliner Weisse has very rarely been done in Belgium and only in recent years so any comparison with 'other Belgian Berliners' is all but meaningless, but from a more international perspective, this reminds me of some of, to name one, To Ol's experiments in this style - that can't be a bad thing, can it?...

28 April 2018, at Zythos Bierfestival. Deputy Taster: Anke.
Hazy orange/amber with a small, frothy, off-white head; no lacing. Aroma of smoked bacon & ham, grapefruit, unripe mandarin, citrus, grassy hops, flowers, some herbs. It tastes medium hoppy bitter and light fruity sweet, yeasty in the back. Dry, bitter, hoppy, grapefruit-like finish, softly lingering smoked malt. Medium body, slick texture, lively carbonation - too much. An interesting one, though not quite there, especially tastewise.
