Pretty cloudy pale yellow beer, creamy small off-white head, little stable, non adhesive. Aroma: lots of grapefruit, citrus, hoppy, bit cheesy, funky, weird. MF: soft carbon, medium body. Taste: pretty acidic start, kettle sour?, lots of citrus, pretty bitter, nice stuff going on here! Aftertaste: more acidic notes, grapefruit peel, pretty bitter, lemon peel, nice stuff!

Zythos 2018. Golden with a big white head. Aroma of meaty German smoke with hints of citrus and grass. Sweetish malty and fruity flavour with smoke.

Light brown colour with lasting head. Initial burst of fruity hop is quickly replaced by leathery, meaty smoke. It's not overpowering though. Finish is clean, hoppy and bitter. Very good quality but not totally to my taste.

Another new brewing initiative in Belgium - they keep popping up at a dazzling rate these days - this time in Putte east of Mechelen. Contrary to many other upstarting brewing projects, this 'duo' did not opt for a reiteration of the überclassic Belgian blonde, dubbel or tripel, but for something rather unusual: an IPA made with smoked (barley and even wheat) malt... Sounds interesting. Very thick and foamy, tightly cobweb-lacing, egg-white, large-bubbled head over a warm orange-hued peach blonde beer, initially as good as clear but with tiny translucent specks of yeast throughout, disturbed by strings of vivid sparkling; shifting to a hazy, more ochre-ish peach with sediment. Aroma indeed reveals smoked bacon, but, as is to be expected from the 'minority share' of smoked malts here, it does not overpower and blends with notes of ripe apple, damp earth, dried old orange peel, soggy cookies, turnip juice, old potatoes, wet peanuts, moist white pepper, soap, wormwood. Fruity, rather estery onset with notes of peach, green banana and red apple, restrained in sweetness with a sourish undercurrent which in itself is highlighted by a sharp, stinging, minerally carbonation (too much so for anything IPA-like, really); bit soapy body due to the (smoked) wheat, otherwise peanut- and bread crust-like with a soft toasty edge. This toasty bitterness supports and accentuates a long, peppery, rooty, earthy hop bitterness in the finish, grapefruit peel- and tonic water-like, matching relatively well with the smoked bacon hint provided by the smoked malts. This relative balance, however, is 'uglified' by too much earthy, phenolic and estery yeastiness, a problem often encountered in Belgian attempts at international IPA. An original choice to combine IPA bitterness with smokiness (have an extra point for audacity), but not all too well executed, with the hop bitterness becoming rather harsh, 'rooty' and dull and lacking in New World aromatics; too Belgian in its yeast profile as well, the earthy breadiness and phenolic spiciness of which interferes too much with the hops and malts. Not an unpleasant beer per se, but I don't think it achieves what it probably set out to do. Ghent's Totem handles this kind of concepts way better, for example. However, if these guys manage to clean up this recipe and pump more aromatic hoppiness in it, of a kind which should match with the smokiness (or, why not, contrasts with it by means of more sweet fruitiness - let's experiment!), then I think they may find the right way to add novelty to the usually conservative Belgian beer culture. Looking forward to which other ideas they may come up with, too.

Bottle at Modeste 2017. Pours rather unclear blonde, small white head. Smell is intense, floral, fruity, creamy. Taste is full, sharp, bitter, intense grains, mild floral and fruity notes. I expected much more by the great smell this beer has, I felt a bit let down for the taste that - appart from it's intensity - isn't bad at all. agreeable body and carbo. perhaps could use some more late-hopping, in stead of only focussing on dry hopping ?

Thanksl! Sampled bottled @ Modeste 2017. orange. Carbonation is very high with raw bitter grainy hop & weeds, hop is raw green with grass & weeds but pleasant, bit too carbonated. Not very USA styled in tastes, bit too fizzy but the hop profile luckily is definitely there & not bad. Not bad & definitely better for me than their Partizaan IPA.

Pours unclear , bit darker amber. Small white head. Smell is almost smokey, not overly intense. Taste is sharp, bit smokey, mild bitterness. not really hoppy, whats an IPA about this ?

Thank you for sharing RB Crew! Sampled bottled @ GBF 2017. Seems like this name is bound to bring associations with Partizan, not sure if that is a competition you want but maybe they are going for beer drinkers who have never heard of Partizan. Dark amber, orange, little head. Nose is nicer than the taste, heavily grainy, break with hop oil, heavy oily orange peel. Taste is grainy but stale spoiled grain, soap, sugar, smoked doesn’t really work & lacks presence, carbonation is far too heavy, grainy. Doesn’t work for me.

Little cloudy amber beer, small creamy beige head, little stable, bit adhesive. aroma: yeast, some citrus, fruity sourish touch, sweet, malty, some tropical fruits, not getting any smoke? MF: lively carbon, medium body. Taste: bit smoky, pretty bitter, sweet malts, caramel, grapefruit bitterness, citrus, bit resinous. Aftertaste: very hoppy, malty, caramel, bit sweet, resinous bitterness, some tropical fruits.
