Description
Abbaye de Brogne was introduced by Brasserie Defosse in 1982 and, in later years, was brewed by Affligem then Lefèbvre. The brand is now owned by brewer Bruno Deghorain of La Binchoise.
Thanks to Bruno, the Abbaye de Brogne Brune and Blonde are now brewed at a brand new microbrewery in the grounds of the abbey itself.

Sampled from bottle. Brownish color, average to medium sized off-white head. Smell and taste malts, brown malts, some caramel and perhaps a hint of brown sugar in the distance with a hint of alcohol. Ok body and carbonation.

75 cl bottle, labeled as 7 ABV. Pours dark, yet clear, chocolate brown. Good white head. Smell is sweet, thick, very much leaves, spices, but very different than the usual x-mas beers. Taste is sharp, bit bitter, dark malts, notes of indeed, roasted bread. Weird ! Not sure how I like it, but due to the interesting taste, this is very drinkable. Its very thin in the mouth, a factor I think is a missed opportunity. The carbonation level is OK.

Organic blonde abbey beer, bought at a Bioplanet store near Ghent. Comes from a printed 33 cl bottle. Cloudy ’old gold’ colour with minuscule dead yeast bits floating, crowned by a frothy, creamy, thickly and broadly lacing, egg-white head. Aroma of crabapple, gooseberry, raw rhubarb (acetaldehyde!), yoghurt, rotting hay, young ’jenever’, unripe pear, raw cut potato, hints of fried egg, burning rubber (clearly DTMS!), old newspapers and dead grass. Crisp onset, restrainedly fruity, unripe Conférence pear, sourish berries and lots of Granny Smith apple, with a minerally ’sound’ to it, a bit chalky too; middle phase consists mainly of a slightly bready pale malt sweetishness with sourish, somewhat spicy yeast on top of it; finish shows persisting green apple sourishness along with ’Poire William’-like alcohol and some herbal, late and subtle hop bitterness. Has a ’full’ kind of feeling to it, but in all, it kind of feels like some artisanal, ’downtuned’ Duvel. Objectively speaking, this is an acceptable Wallonian blonde, but the acetaldehyde did bother me a bit.

(Bottle, Delirium Café, Brussels, 27 Oct 2013) Golden colour, hazy, with white head. Malty, fruity nose with grainy malt, tropical fruit, bread and hints of yeast. Malty, fruity taste with notes of bread, grain, peaches, dried pineapple and a spicy bitterness in the finish. Medium body, with a certain sweetness. Fresh and tasty Belgian blond. Quite nice.
