Description
Our passion for never settling, and brewing quality, flavorful beers started with our founder, Jim Koch. He brewed the first batch of Boston Lager in his kitchen – a recipe that belonged to his great great grandfather that he found in his father’s attic back in the early 1980’s. The Boston Beer Company has grown through the years to become the fourth largest brewery in the United States.

Initially, Koch rented excess capacity and brewed the beer at the Pittsburgh Brewing Company. As sales increased Koch developed other contract arrangements at various brewing facilities with excess capacity. To reduce reliance on contract brewing Cincinnati's Hudepohl-Schoenling brewery was purchased in early 1997).

In 2007, the Boston Beer Company purchased the former F. & M. Schaefer Brewing Company brewery in Breinigsville, Pennsylvania. By 2012, the Company was producing two-thirds of all its beer at the Breinigsville facility, and it has increased brewing capacity there. The Boston Beer Company also has a small R&D brewery located in Boston (Jamaica Plain), Massachusetts, where public tours and beer tastings are offered.

Clear light amber body, creamy medium off-white head. Tart cranberry aroma with an earthy backdrop, definitely in a fruit beer sense rather than a lambic sense. Sweet and supremely sugary, with hints of cranberry that are mostly drowned in sugar and syrup (what’s with this brewery’s fascination with maple syrup?). The malt is hollow and vapid once the sugars subside. More of a novelty for the masses than a good beer.

Deep clear red-brown body, thin off-white head. Doppelbocky aroma with plum, prune, and caramel that almost hide the ginger and cinnamon. Initially, spices (especially ginger) are more evident in the flavor, but the caramely, toasty malts soon balance them nicely. The body carries over the bocklike character of the aroma, but it’s not too heavy on the palate. I’m glad I found this outside of the "winter" pack that includes their lame light beers.

Golden/orange colour. The head is nothing but a thin lid. Bitter almond aroma, maybe there’s some cherries there too. Thin and watery. The flavour is unripe cherries and marzipan. What a lousy beer I had for my 900’th rating :-(

I think Sam Adams gets a bad rap sometimes, and people are overly critical of the brewer. Sam Adams brews high-quality beers, even the ones that are bland and boring. They are still well-made! This beer is no exception. Pours a dark brown color with a medium beige head that dissipated quickly. Thin and sticky lacing. The aroma is roasty with malt, dark chocolate and hops. Medium-bodied with bitter chocolate undertones. Malt, caramel and some coffee flavors. The finish is where the hops become more apparent. All in all this Porter is not up there with Fuller’s and the like but it is definitely a good beer.

2004 bottle. Pours a clear dark mahogany brown with light tan tinges on the sides and a yellow head. Aroma of hops, light roast and some strange acidity. Nuttiness and light caramel. Flavor is lightly roasty, moderately sweet, with a good musty/dusty English feel to it. Must be the chocolate malt. No alcohol apparency, moderate bitterness on the end. Amazingly, this beer did not lose flavor on the end, and was quite medium-full bodied throughout. No wateriness, good flavor. I was shocked. Typical Sam Adams sharp, fizzy carbonation though.

Bottled (BB 03/2005)
Red ruby, good foamy medium head, lace. Sweet, malty, hoppy, berries, black currant nose, almost Belgium character. Medium-bodied, chewy, flavor of toffee, berries. Aftertaste has some late bitterness. Decent brew, but a bit unbalanced. Though this is weizen bock, this has some Märzen notes. (6/4/5/3/12 3.0)
Re-rated, alc. 5.6% (BB 09/2006)
Ruby red color, creamy white head, lace. Aroma has wheat and rye, some tobacco. Medium to full bodied. Sweet, rounded barley malty flavor. Real cross over -beer of styles. (5/4/7/3/13 3.2)

Bottled. Very dark brown, not muchhead. Sweet chocoalte aroma. Medium sweet abd fairly malty. Soft, yet clean mouthfeel, rather simplistic malt profile. Cocoa finish. Drinkable, but not very remarkable.

$4 dollar draught at Redbones. Much better than having to pay the exorbitant 16 dollars for the whole bottle. Dark brown body, mostly opaque with a small beige head. Aroma of ever so slight prunes, raisins and a hint of oily yeast, but mostly dominated by a rich milk chocolate. Flavor begins with possibly the best chocolate flavor I’ve ever tasted in a beer, smooth, rich, sweet and milky. Creamy body that dosent thin out. Wonderful chocolate beer. Ok, that being said, let’s talk about the rest of the beer. Hmm, not too much to talk about. It DOES have a bocky yeast to it, but it is so light and in the background, it is very hard to taste. I’m not picking up much if any roast. Just left with the bocky yeastiness that is barely perceptible, (but tastey). Some will call it subtle, I call it selling out to make this beer more drinkable to the general public. If I’m wrong, the fact still stands that this needs more than just chocolate.

Pours is a deep red with no real head. Aroma is is thin and nothing really stands out. Flavor is chocolate and malts but again nothing really stands out. Overall pretty uneventful.

Pours a ruby red out of the bottle. Aroma is sugar and spice. Flavor is caramel malts with lots of spice to go around. I get some hops present and a touch of alcohol as well. A nice brew to warm you on a cold winter night. Comes in the winter sampler. I wish they would offer this in a six pack come next winter.
