Description
Our passion for never settling, and brewing quality, flavorful beers started with our founder, Jim Koch. He brewed the first batch of Boston Lager in his kitchen – a recipe that belonged to his great great grandfather that he found in his father’s attic back in the early 1980’s. The Boston Beer Company has grown through the years to become the fourth largest brewery in the United States.

Initially, Koch rented excess capacity and brewed the beer at the Pittsburgh Brewing Company. As sales increased Koch developed other contract arrangements at various brewing facilities with excess capacity. To reduce reliance on contract brewing Cincinnati's Hudepohl-Schoenling brewery was purchased in early 1997).

In 2007, the Boston Beer Company purchased the former F. & M. Schaefer Brewing Company brewery in Breinigsville, Pennsylvania. By 2012, the Company was producing two-thirds of all its beer at the Breinigsville facility, and it has increased brewing capacity there. The Boston Beer Company also has a small R&D brewery located in Boston (Jamaica Plain), Massachusetts, where public tours and beer tastings are offered.

Dark burgundy colour. The aroma is creamy, almondy, and Oreo-like. Ultra sweet Vietnamese coffee, light roast on the palate. Fatty body…I have issues with that, but otherwise this is a serviceable sweet stout.

A light, refreshing brew. A touch light on the cranberries, and certainly so on the lambic.

This product is a mere shadow of its former self. A sample today showed no hop aroma - a sharp contrast to what it used to be. Whereas yesterday’s Sam Adams was near pilsner-like, today’s Boston Lager is little more than a crisp macrobrew. It got nasty as it warmed - diacetyl or maybe just too much caramel came through, ruining the finish badly.

Maybe I missed something; or maybe its because of my West Coast upbringing, but this didn't strike me as particularly interesting. Very middle of the road in all respects.

Updating my original rating from 6/26/2000. A little downgrade from that inflated newbie 4.0. I still think of it as a bit chewy with a nice sweet caramel presence, but this is now definitely smokey, and that is a nice addition that either wasn’t present in 2000 or I just didn’t recognize it. Clean, balanced, pleasant enough beer. Old rating: A very good interpretation of the style. Def malty, with plenty of body. Even a bit chewy (the way I like it)

Golden, very carbonated. This approaches the better pilsners of the world, but just has some unpleasant bitterness and flavors that make this a second team choice.

rerate: I like this quite a bit better than my 2004 rating preserved below but its still just an ordinary beer. Light bodied citrusy wheat, mostly clean, drinkable, neutral. Pours a milky gold with a near-creamy nicely lasting head. Aroma is clearly herbal and hoppy with an indistinct spice. Quite unbalanced flavor - initial impression is a sickly sweet malt, with an immediate tang, leading to an unbalanced bitter finish. Strangely thick mouthfeel - this is not a good beer at all. Poor as stand alone quaffer, and ruins any food you might drink it with. 6 4 1 2 6 total: 1.8

New comments: Pours dark amber-bronze with large creamy tan head. No lacing but otherwise good head retention. Med strength malty aroma with notes of fresh dough, toffee and caramel. Very light spicy hop presence. Intensely sweet and thick in the mouth, with full caramelly toffee flavor, very slight note of biting astringency on the sides of the tongue. Lingering alcoholic warmth and sweet almost coffeeish finish. Sits fairly heavy on the palate and in the stomach, becoming cloying and one-dimensional. In the end, unbalanced and overdone with caramel malt, lacking munich malt.
