Description
Our passion for never settling, and brewing quality, flavorful beers started with our founder, Jim Koch. He brewed the first batch of Boston Lager in his kitchen – a recipe that belonged to his great great grandfather that he found in his father’s attic back in the early 1980’s. The Boston Beer Company has grown through the years to become the fourth largest brewery in the United States.
Initially, Koch rented excess capacity and brewed the beer at the Pittsburgh Brewing Company. As sales increased Koch developed other contract arrangements at various brewing facilities with excess capacity. To reduce reliance on contract brewing Cincinnati's Hudepohl-Schoenling brewery was purchased in early 1997).
In 2007, the Boston Beer Company purchased the former F. & M. Schaefer Brewing Company brewery in Breinigsville, Pennsylvania. By 2012, the Company was producing two-thirds of all its beer at the Breinigsville facility, and it has increased brewing capacity there. The Boston Beer Company also has a small R&D brewery located in Boston (Jamaica Plain), Massachusetts, where public tours and beer tastings are offered.

This is the first time I have had this beer. Sampled from a 12 oz brown bottle this beer pours a very dark brown color with a large tan head. The aroma is sweet and malty with a light vegetal undertone. The flavor is strong with roasted dark malts and has a moderate floral hop presence. The finish is a bit too sour and tangy for my taste though.

Bottle. Sweet cocoa malt aroma. Reddish brown color with small head. Nice complex flavor - malt, cocoa, flowery hops, hint of apple. A nice ale - while not being the most spectacular one I’ve ever had, it’s full flavored and drinkable.

Bottle. There’s malty and some fruity aromas from this golden beer. It pours with a white head. Taste is malt and hops, and they both stay for a while. The bitterness is a bit intense before it fades out. A very decent lager. (050919)

Bottle. Bready chocolate malt and hay aroma. Dark chestnut brown color with large tan head. Mildly sweet bready chocolate malt and mildly bitter hay/ash flavor. Full bodied with a nice mouthfeel. Solid. 2nd rating 12 years later and I really haven't change my opinion much.

Deep golden pour with white head. Spicy aroma that follows through in the flavor. Acidity adds a slight sour aftertaste. A nice summer ale that, because of its peppery spice, would drink fine in the fall, too.

I have heard some good things about this beer so I had been looking forward to trying one. Sampled from a 12 oz brown bottle this beer pours a very dark brown color with a large tan head. The aroma is sweet toasty malts and a hint of coffee. The flavor is toasty roasty malts with light coffee and chocolate notes. There is a hint of hops underneath. This is a rather good beer for the style. I have a feeling that people would rate this one higher if they were not biased against this company.

It’s great that restaurants and bars that used to serve only mass-market beers now also offer this latest mass-market beer. It has aroma (hops, malt) and taste (hops) and a slight bitterness. Like Yogi, it’s better than your average beer.

Had this on draught at the American Beer Fest 2005 and again at Redbones. Pours a deep chestnut and hickory brownish-tan, with some dull-olive brown and darker, almost violet hues swirling around. Hazy and unfiltered with a dark beige-yellow head perched nicely atop, about one finger high and retained well. Aroma smells of dry chocolate, not quite bitter, with light toffee and hints of raisins and prunes. Bits of vinousness and a dry, earthy, mustiness as well. Flavor begins with a good balance of dry and sweet, light raisins and a pruney/vinousness slowly building on the palate. Light chocolate notes, dry yeast and earthiness. Texture is a bit watery at times, slightly gritty as well, with a medium body overall. Moderate carbonation. Very respectable sweet stout, well-executed I thought. Wish stuff like this was a regular offering on tap around the area. Perhaps a bit of sticky sugariness, on the finish, that detracts from the overall complexity.
