Description
Hildegard (Odette) Overmeire graduated as an industrial engineer with a specialization in brewery. After several years of teaching and other assignments for breweries, she started brewing her own beer under the name Urthel in 2000, together with her husband Bas van Ostaden. To this end, they founded the brewery De Leyerth in Ruiselede. Between 2007 and 2011, the Urthel beers were brewed in the De Koningshoeven brewery in Berkel-Enschot.

In February 2011, a microbrewery was bought and installed, so that from July 2011 there was no longer a brewery company called De Leyerth, but a microbrewery Urthel. The three base beers continued to be brewed at La Trappe and the microbrewery was used for experimenting with new beers.

In 2012 the Urthel brand was bought by Swinkels Family Brewers. The name "Brouwerij Urthel" has been discontinued, but Hildegard Overmeire kept on brewing beer for local consumption in her food and brew house '''De Hoppeschuur'' in her microbrewery. In 2014 De Hoppeschuur had to move to a new venue in Knesselare, De Hoppeschuur continued its activities there till it was closed in 2019.

Draught @ Hoppeschuur. Dark brown color with a nice red hue, medium sized a bit fizzy beige head. Smell and taste malts, coffee, roasty, dark malts, decently bitter. Thin texture, too thin imo, average body, decent carbonation.

Clear golden color, average to medium sized white head that leaves good lacing. Smell and taste lightly malts, some yeast and fruitpeel influences, a bit too herbal for my liking, quite bitter and towards the end hops certainly come through combined with a touch of sweetness. Medium body and carbonation. Too herbal for me, but certainly a good beer and I must admit it pairs very well with the rib eye.

Draught @ Hoppeschuur. Clear golden color, average to medium sized white head. Aroma is less prominent than I had expected. Taste is also more conservative than I had expected. Lightly malts, a nice subtle bitterness, slightly some lemongrass but quite distant sort of speak. Average to medium body, medium carbonation.

Draught @ Hoppeschuur. Clear pale yellow color, small white head. Aroma is lemon-ish, grassy and refreshing. Taste also has the grassy lemon-ish, hops, hop bitterness and a slight touch of fruitpeel. Very nice lightly dry, easy drinkable, very refreshing first beer of the evening before having our dinner. A very promising start imo.

Draught Good cream-coloued head, slowly receding over granat-shot brown beer. Faintly sweet, quite bready nose, dark but sweetish, not very roasted bread. Bit of caramel. Roasted malts make it almost going to smokey. Wry-ish, bitterish taste again quite bready, Pumpernickel. Dried herbs. Not more than medium bodied, bit slick, well-carbonated. Actually quite pleasing, easy-drinking beer despite the 7% ABV. Goes well with the meat dishes @ the restaurant.

Draught Very good dense & very finely bubbled, just yellowish head, textbook lace, over hazy ochre-yellow beer with a mossy sheen. Yeast UFO’s. Spicy nose, estery, citrus. Hints at ginger, nutmeg, clove, mustardpowder. Grainy flavour, Weizenmalt, again faint citrus (lemony) but precious little other fruit. Bit neutral, generally speaking. Very slight mineral touch. Spritzy MF, gristslick, yeast-filled. Much less outspoken than a German Hefeweizen; less clove/banana.
