Description
Hildegard (Odette) Overmeire graduated as an industrial engineer with a specialization in brewery. After several years of teaching and other assignments for breweries, she started brewing her own beer under the name Urthel in 2000, together with her husband Bas van Ostaden. To this end, they founded the brewery De Leyerth in Ruiselede. Between 2007 and 2011, the Urthel beers were brewed in the De Koningshoeven brewery in Berkel-Enschot.

In February 2011, a microbrewery was bought and installed, so that from July 2011 there was no longer a brewery company called De Leyerth, but a microbrewery Urthel. The three base beers continued to be brewed at La Trappe and the microbrewery was used for experimenting with new beers.

In 2012 the Urthel brand was bought by Swinkels Family Brewers. The name "Brouwerij Urthel" has been discontinued, but Hildegard Overmeire kept on brewing beer for local consumption in her food and brew house '''De Hoppeschuur'' in her microbrewery. In 2014 De Hoppeschuur had to move to a new venue in Knesselare, De Hoppeschuur continued its activities there till it was closed in 2019.

17/III/13 - on nitro tap @ De Hoppeschuur - BB: n/a (2013-248)

Very dark brown to black beer, no light comes through. Solid creamy beige to brown head, pretty solid, non adhesive. Aroma: caramel, bit sugary, mocha, coffee. I have the feeling that the nitro prevents a lot of aroma coming out of the beer. MF: soft to no carbon, medium body. Taste: lots of mocha, bitter chocolate, roasted malts, some lactose sugar, little bitter. Aftertaste: cocoa powder, bit woody, caramel, coffee and mocha, more chocolate.

Clear dark brown beer, creamy beige head, little stable, non adhesive. Aroma: caramel, chocolate, dried fruits, bit smoky, ripe fruits, some banana. MF: ok carbon, medium to full body. Taste: pretty smoky, dried fruits, caramel, sweet malts, bit bready. Aftertaste: smoke, some chocolate, mocha, little sweet, alcohol is noticeable, more smoky, little hoppy bitterness. Really nice and interesting beer!

Draught Dark brown beer with mossy sheen. Sesame oil, very apparent, with soy sauce, as an Oriental marinade, chocolate. Rosewater, very aromatic, again a tickle of soy sauce; Faint sweetish, but on the opposite side of cloying. Low carbonation, medium bodied. FIRST: needs to be retried, beer too young and uncarbonated. Very promising, tasty. Somehow, Hildegarde’s dark beers always strike me as better than the lighter coloured ones.

Draught Medium off-white head, fast dwindling to white rim over medium carbonated, metallic ochre-orange beer. Spicy nose with some faint citrus, fresh white bread, breadyeast; Dull)-bitterish, again mainly spicy flavour, rootspices. Faint mineral quality, coriander-ish, without it coming out in force, galangaroot. Faint sweetish malts, after some wamring tasting like fresh crystal malt. Feels better carbonated than it looks; Maybe medium bodied. Dry finish in the aftertaste. Not th most characterful of Hoppeschuur beers. But does well as a not-too-strong thirstquencher with some body all the same;

Draught Small, off-white rim over hazed, nearly opaque red-amber beer. Smelling sweet, syrupy, (hazel)nutty and hazelnut oil, or Nutella; bit of fusels. Fusels, vinous, nutty, dried fruits as woody dates and dried bananaslices; pretty complex. Very rich, voluptuously creamy & viscous, alcoholheat, medium to heavy-bodied. Sufficiently different from the original Urthel/Samaranth, but at least as interesting.

Draught Small head, fast receding to beige rim over virtually black beer. Burnt chocolatemalt, dry, stout-like nose; slightly ashy. Liquorice, but with very restrained sweetness. Dry, ashy main flaovur, slowly receding. Medium bodied at least, seems quite well-attenuated. Nice, if unspectacular; but yet another one that drinks away just superbly.

Draught Small cream-coloured head over fully hazy/opaque brown beer with a reddish sheen. Interesting nose with dark malts, chocolate, faintly meaty, tad nutty and certainly Islay malt (if only once warmed). smoked, if discreet, malty, nutty (pecan?, hazelnut,...), bit phenolic. Medium bodied at least, quite slick, long lingering flavours. GOOD, Hildegarde! This is what I like - better than the Noir de Noir!

Appearance - 8 | Aroma - 7 | Flavor - 6 | Texture - 6 | Overall - 7

Draught Clear orange-copper beer with a small to medium white head, fine and dense, rather stable. Neutral nose, with some faint caramel. Faint meaty esters and grass. Sweetish, quite some restsweetness. Faint grassy & herbal aftertaste, getting outspokenly spicy-yeasty, especially warming up. Later, definite, if misleading impression of whiskymalt (not: Islaymalt). Slick, slightly burning MF, medium bodied at best. Clear, crisp, if somewhat sweet overall flavour. Hides its alcohol exceptionally well - dangerous!
