Description
Hildegard (Odette) Overmeire graduated as an industrial engineer with a specialization in brewery. After several years of teaching and other assignments for breweries, she started brewing her own beer under the name Urthel in 2000, together with her husband Bas van Ostaden. To this end, they founded the brewery De Leyerth in Ruiselede. Between 2007 and 2011, the Urthel beers were brewed in the De Koningshoeven brewery in Berkel-Enschot.

In February 2011, a microbrewery was bought and installed, so that from July 2011 there was no longer a brewery company called De Leyerth, but a microbrewery Urthel. The three base beers continued to be brewed at La Trappe and the microbrewery was used for experimenting with new beers.

In 2012 the Urthel brand was bought by Swinkels Family Brewers. The name "Brouwerij Urthel" has been discontinued, but Hildegard Overmeire kept on brewing beer for local consumption in her food and brew house '''De Hoppeschuur'' in her microbrewery. In 2014 De Hoppeschuur had to move to a new venue in Knesselare, De Hoppeschuur continued its activities there till it was closed in 2019.

Draught Crystal clear cognac-golden beer under a thick, dense, just off-white head. Toasted and sweet malts, whiff of diacetyl, parsley. Toasted, sweet again. the diacetyl seems gone in the flavour, but the sweetness is even stronger. Further hints at corn, and of (sweet) whisky. Alcoholwarmth, creamy feel from the head, lightly burning MF. Low carbonation. Quite (too) sweet for a tripel. Some more attenuation would be welcome, IMO.

Draught Slightly cream-coloured head, very even, fine & dense over crystal-clear pale copper beer; textbook lace. Spicy nose, lightly coloured and lightly toasted malts, English type, bread(crust). Slightly oxydized, but agreably toasted malts, again very British. Again sweet bread flavour, suggestion of diacetyl. Quite slick, bit oily feel. Light to medium bodied. Feels a bit undercarbonated. Better quality British keg, I'd say. Might turn out spectacular on cask...

Draught Small but very stable dense snowwhite head over (cold)hazy ochre-golden beer. Coriander³, rootspices, so intense it smells almost as raw carrots. Softer coriander in the mouth (thank God), but with a very sweet main taste - the carrots boiled and pureed? After a while, fake citrus all around. Warming up I get a hint at diacetyl. Wheatslick, mediumbodied but seems denser; good carbonation. Coriander, coriander. Hildegard toch, kan er nu echt niemand het laten?

Draught Small, beige-russet head, fast gone over muddy reddish brown beer. Very vinous, red fruit on alcohol, deep complex fusels & esters - fruity, oak/wood. Nose suggests even some sweetness. Quite sweet indeed, alcohol enforced, with lots of fruity notes, some nutty flavour as hazelnut, serious bit of wood and a nice (lactic) sourness surrounding. Again very vinous, red (fruit)wine, aged in oak. Some alcoholthinning, and the beer seems also thinner because of the loss of carbonation. Very long-lasting flavours, bit chewy after all. Excellent - as expected. But still, I doubt that even longer aging would better it, now. 10/4/8/4/18

Draught Rusty-pink beer, hazy, with a small pinkish rim. Old wood, raspberry jam, fruitwine, sherry, raspberry liqueur and raspberry vinegar. Raspberry, lactic- & fruitacids. Acetic is probably there, but remains under the identification threshold. Again a sherry-like flavour, fino on wood. Each new sip delivers a fleeting sweet impression, as from waffles. Titillating MF, both from acids and from hidde, but present carbonation; lipsmacking acidity. Long-lasting flavours; acidthinning. (Much) better than the sum of its parts - which aren't exactly lame. It's one of those beers that make you feel happy. Thanks to Bas, Hildegard and Sander! 8/4/8/4/18

Draught Huge dense, fine yellowish head with textbook alce over (cold)hazed amber beer. Very "beery" nose, coloured malts, wild-ish hops, maltsyrup (but not indicating sweetness). Dry bitterish-sweetish taste, hint at pine resin; bit wry but nowhere unpleasantly so. Warming up, acquires quickly an almondy flavour. Medium bodied, quite slick. Pretty good. Not one to quaff, but not a sipping beer either, going down very well for its ABV. 7/4/7/4/14

Draught Thick-set cream head, very stable, over deep brown ale with garnet-purple sheen. Beautiful wood/lactic; brandy, very vinous; deep complex aromaprofile. Hints @ vanilla and just a hint at maple syrup and smoke. Red wine (Bordeaux), vinous, red cherries (?), truckload of incense, again a little touch of vanilla. Old wine, brandy. Very slick, viscous to chewy, alcoholheat. Long lasting flavours. Another absolutely gorgeous beer. 9/4/9/4/18
