Microbrouwerij Urthel (Brouwerij De Leyerth)
Microbrewery
in Knesselare,
East Flanders,
Belgium 🇧🇪
Associated with 2 Venues
Established in 2000
Closed in 2019
In February 2011, a microbrewery was bought and installed, so that from July 2011 there was no longer a brewery company called De Leyerth, but a microbrewery Urthel. The three base beers continued to be brewed at La Trappe and the microbrewery was used for experimenting with new beers.
In 2012 the Urthel brand was bought by Swinkels Family Brewers. The name "Brouwerij Urthel" has been discontinued, but Hildegard Overmeire kept on brewing beer for local consumption in her food and brew house '''De Hoppeschuur'' in her microbrewery. In 2014 De Hoppeschuur had to move to a new venue in Knesselare, De Hoppeschuur continued its activities there till it was closed in 2019.

Draught Medium but ultrafine & dense off-white head over brilliant deep garnet beer under thick lace. Textbook. Superb sherry & cherry aromas, lactic acid, vinous nose, invasive and intriguing, red fruit on precious old wine. Sweet-lactic nose, fruity (red fruit), sweet & sour cherries. Lipsmacking acidity, medium bodied, acidthinning and some -burn, close to dry-out effect. Arguably Hildegards’ best ever sampled. 9/5/8/4/17

Draught Huge cream-coloured head over clear copper-chestnut beer. Nice peat smoke nose with some sweet malt asset, nearly as agave syrup. Whisky malt, temptative Islay touch. Light body, but there is sufficient malt to prevent any emptiness. Sweet background. Low carbonation. Sweet, but nice Rauch. The nose, however, suggested even more Islay fireworks. Good, anyway! 7/4/7/3/15

Sample @ Hoppeschuur, Knesselare. Hazy yellow colour, lots of white foam disappear quickly. Tart funky barnyard nose. Lemon and citrus. Tart notes of seabuckthorn. Bready taste, good.

Happy to have found this at my local Delhaize. Been searching for a beer by this brewery for a while now, and I can’t seem to get to their location. So this is a nice surprise ! Pours dark brown, ok white head. Smell is weak, bit sweet, somewhat roasty. Taste is bit bitter, mild coffee undertone. Rather weak in body and intensity. nice carbo. Not a beer i’d go wild over, but OK .

F: average, pale brown, not long lasting. C: dark but not as dark as it should be in this style, reddish tones against the light. A: roasted malt, coffee, cocoa, caramel, pine nuts, light peppery, herbal. T: malty, coffee, chocolate, cocoa, earthy bitterness, dark fruits, light cherries, woody, medium body, low to medium carbonated, not bad, 0,75l bottle from Delhaize in Brussels.

Draught Dense cream head, black beer. Coriander, dark and other malts, carrots, roasted but sweetish. Light smoked - beechwood flavour; again coriander-like, but much milder than the aroma, finish a tad soupy. Yeastesters (I guess there is the ’coriander’ really), very low roastprofile; totally attenuated. Spritzy, light, near watery body. Not convinced...
