Bomber from The Davis Beer Shoppe in Davis, CA. Pours clear bright copper/amber with a creamy off-white head. Aroma is mild roast caramel with some barley wine hop levels. Full bodied. Flavor is roast malt with a lot of hop. Still has that brown sugar aspect, but there’s floral, resin, citrus, grass ... And there’s a lot of hop. Mild mouth burn. But the hop isn’t NW harsh. It’s just pretty close to overwhelming. Not sure it finishes dry, but probably close enough. This one is for hop - not harshness. Did I mention there’s a lot of hop?

Bottle. Pours with a completely clear golden to lightly copper hued body and a large, somewhat tight, just off-white head with decent retention. Aromas are of sticky caramel/toffee, light pine, resin, caramel, lightly herbal and overripe fruity hop notes. A bit of caramelized canned pineapple. Flavors are pretty good. Some burnt caramel notes (flan), lightly grainy, sawdust. Hop flavors show resin, tangerine, bitter grapefruit pith. Quite bitter, with an overall bitter balance. Minimal esters. Medium bodied, medium carbonation. Kind of warming for the ABV. Pretty decent offering, not mind blowing, but certainly a solid IPA from a young brewery. Feels very traditional in its hopping (kind of a throwback IPA if you will).

Tap at the Rubicon. Pours clear copper. Cat piss aroma - lots of citrus. Near med body. Flavor is really hoppy citrus with some arguable floral over a mild caramel backbone. It’s very hoppy and very bitter and very very good.

Sampled at the DC Ratebeer Gathering. Pours a watery, opaque black with a thin, spitty, off white head. Plenty of vanilla in the nose, brown sugar, molasses, some pumpernickel bread, a little malt. Flavor is sweet, vanilla beans, molasses, brown sugar, cakey, light coffee. Medium bodied, sweet finish.

Sample at the Jackie O’s Bottle Sale on 08/27/2011. This beer pours brownish black with a hint of amber around the edges. Medium tan head that recedes steadily. Aroma of roasted malt and slightly sour coffee. Medium body with a roasty character and notes of malt, coffee and tannins. The finish is malty with a short fruity aftertaste. Something seems off with this one, barely average overall.

Bomber from BevMo online (Pleasanton). Nose is rich chocolate, with roasty coffee hints mixed with moderate vanilla. Black with a medium cinnamon tan head that laces lightly as it recedes. Flavor is chocolate with light vanilla with coffee and light bitterness in the finish.

Bomber from Bottle Barn in Santa Rosa, CA. Bottle says 8%. Pours translucent orange amber with a creamy off-white or beige head. Smells of citrus and a little barnyard. The body is sort of medium creamy. The flavor has rye, some Belgian spice, and some light barnyard accompaniment. Citrus is very light. It gets more saison like with time. Seems like it is a bit confused. Drinks well.

Bomber from Corti Bros. in Sacramento, CA. Pours lightish gold with a transient fizzy white head. Aroma is wheat with a little hard to distinguish fruit. A bit acidic. Med body with foamy carb. The flavor is wheat, with a little pineapple, then it finishes with a huge burst of that acidic pineapple finish - which lingers on. Oddly the flavor is in the finish rather than the beginning. Interesting stuff. Hop seems lost in the surf. Finishes pretty dry, acidic and astringent. The effect is not unlike having eaten fresh, not quite ripe pineapple. Pool drink!

Bottle shared by Marcus. Pours rather orange with a slight white head. Aromas of peach and citrus. Lush fruity and floral flavors. Nicely bitter. Excellently smooth and tasty.

An interesting and solid DIPA. This beer didn’t start off great, but once warmed, it gained something. It’s mildly bitter, though rich in hop flavor. The hop aroma could use more strength, but it’s a nice mix of herbs (sage, maybe), mint, pine and tangerine. Mouthfeel is light - felt a bit watery when cold. Good beer. I was pleasantly surprised.
