12oz bottle, sweet trade bonus, pours with an inky dark body that supports a thin mocha colored head of foam. The aroma offers up big dark roasty malts, earthy chocolate malts, burnt black patent malts and more earthy chocolate goodness at the end of the draw. The taste is pretty smooth yet rich and deep with dark roasted malts, plenty of chocolate malts that have an edge of earthy chocolate and then some spicy black licorice. To midway a bit of booze shows up as well as chocolate and burnt malts that help take this to the finish. Nice stuff that’s rich balanced and deep with roasted malty goodness.

Bottle (2012) thanks to 5000. Cracked this open on a whim, sort of a celebration I guess after finally deciding to buy a new vehicle. Hooray debt!? An agressive pour yields two fingers of creamy chocolate milk colored head atop a jet black body. Roasty and smokey nose, but a little sweet too. Silky mouthful and heavy like 10W30. Bittersweet and smokey, bits of ash play along with the heavy roast. Seems like just a little anise is present too. This has a lot going for it and I’d love to try it again with a year or so of age.

Bomber from Malt & Vine. Pours almost translucent gold with a slight and transient white head. Aroma is clean, lightly spicy. Just a hint of breadiness. Med body, nearly. Some pale malt/breadiness with moderate bitter and spicy/grassy aspects. It turns fairly bitter in the finish, mostly in a spicy way. This is indeed a warm weather beer, and seems quite light despite fairly strong flavors and an ABV in the IPA range. Pretty good stuff.

On nitro tap at Brouwer's Caf� for Big Wood '12. Firstly, this is a fucked up idea - a blueberry pale ale, aged in whiskey barrels and then nitro'd. WTF?? Anyway… pours a very dirty, murky dark amber with a medium creamy off-white head from the nitro. Weird aroma of blueberries upfront that seem like they've been liquefied with whiskey - the blueberries dominate though. Flavour is dominated by the blueberries, bringing to mind a boozy blueberry muffin. The whiskey is not that apparent - smooth, creamy mouthfeel, with an extremely high astringency on the finish. Very bizarre, unlike anything I've tasted. Oddly drinkable, though not the most enjoyable. Not bad.

On tap at Old Town Ale House, pours a clear golden with a medium white head. Aroma of brett yeast, some lightly fruity esters and floral hops. Flavour is quite citric fruity, with a medium tartness, some floral notes and some crackery malts in back. Refreshingly tart and highly drinkable.

On draught at Elephant & Castle in Seattle during a "Meet The Brewers" event. The beer pours dark brownish-amber with a medium off-white head that recedes steadily to an outer ring. Short strings of lacing on the glass. The aroma is malty with some caramel and hops notes. Medium body with flavors of roasted malt, resiny hops and caramel. The finish is sweet with an earthy malt aftertaste. Decent overall.

Bottle sample at a tasting at Dagan’s place. Thanks Dagan. Very dark brown with a beige head. Roasty aroma of chocolate, coffee, light fruity notes and some spiciness. Flavor starts sweetish and continues drier with coffee, a bit of fruits and a spicy-roasty finish. Medium-bodied.

Bomber from Malt & Vine. Pours dark copper with a creamy/foamy off-white head. Aroma is primarily cooked caramel. But there’s a mixed floral/citrus aspect. Full bodied. Flavor is very fresh - floral and resin with some secondary citrus. This is headed towards a very hoppy barley wine. There’s no hop burn, but there’s an awful lot of hop. It crawls with hop. I’m thinking the IBUs would be big. Very clean. Incredibly tasty. My mouth is accruing bitterness.

Bomber from Malt and Vine. ABV 5.9%. Pours very dark brown with a creamy beige/tan head. Aroma is a little chocolate over smooth burnt malt. About med body. Flavor is smooth, very smooth, burnt malt with chocolate. Can’t pin down a particular hop characteristic - if pressed I’d choose grass - but the finish is dry, mildly astringent, and bitter. Drinks very well. It is a nice break from all the ISs out there.
