Description
Beer for purists. Pure & Simple. Here, amidst the pure shores and rolling glens of the Isle of Man, Okell's has been defined by our beautiful Island for over 170 years and guided, in all that we brew, by its unique Brewing Purity Law.

Dr. William Okell, a Cheshire surgeon, started Okell's Brewery in Castle Hill, Douglas, Isle of Man in 1850. He was a man of singular drive and ambition - by 1874 Dr. Okell owned many of the pubs on the island, had convinced Tynwald (the Isle of Man's parliament), to create an act ensuring the purity of beer brewed on the Isle of Man, and built The Falcon Steam Brewery just outside Douglas.

It's A Continuing Tradition...
We care about the beers we make, and for our Head Brewer Kevin Holmes, it's a never ending passion to create the perfect pint of Okell's. Making the perfect pint from only 4 ingredients is a special skill handed down by generations of Master Brewers.

Continuing our tradition of innovation, Okell's has the only wide gap plate and frame heat exchanger for heating the wort in the Copper in the British Isles.

Bottle, as Coal Fire Porter. A nice-looking beer, clear, dark brown body, and with a lasting, dense tan head. Quite sweetish on the nose, with some burnt malt, coffee and a little chocolate. A bit weak though. The flavor is much the same, but quite dry, yet there’s a sweet touch, and of course the burnt malt, coffee and notes of chocolate. Not much fruityness going on. Some hoppy bitterness though. A good dash of coffee-like bitterness too. Quite thin on the palate, but considering it’s 4.6% ABV, it is expected. As the beer warms up, some licorice occur in both aroma and flavor. Nice. The finish is a bit fruity, quite sweet, and with the same flavors found initially. Sure easy to drink, and quite enjoyable. Cask-conditioned at the Crosse Keys (JDW), City of London 3/4/08. Deep, hazy gold with a decent white head. Aroma of ginger with some peppery hops. The flavour began slightly sweet before some big spicing kicked in - the ginger was fine but the chilli was a bit crude, leaving a tingling sensation on the lips. Ok as a novelty.

Cask handpull at County Hotel, JDW, Ashford. Gold with thin ivory head. Quite an inviting aroma of mixed spice and the base beer is fine, but oh dear, the spice is rather unsubtle and unintegrated. Ginger and chillis really come through. Aroma is rather good. OK golden bitter, bit too much chilli on finish for me, but still, makes a change to standard bitters/golden ales.

Cask at The National Winter Ales Festival, Manchester 2008, thanks to Mes for this one Poured dark brown with a nose of smoked malts, there was a smokiness to this but having had more than a couple of the Scherlenka Urbocks this was beaten into submission. This was still a pretty decent beer with coffee in the mouth and some bitter chocolate, these flavours lingered but again I just kept dreamily thinking of Urbock which was another beer that Mes had pointed out to me.

Cask at GBBF 2007. A dark golden beer with no head. The aroma is sweet malty with light notes of caramel and hops. The flavor is sweet malty with a slightly bitter finish. Kind of boring.
