Description
Fiddlehead Brewing Company is located just outside of Burlington, VT in the scenic town of Shelburne. Our owner and Brewmaster Matt “Matty-O” Cohen opened the doors on New Year’s Eve of 2011 and since then we have gained worldwide acclaim with our lineup of approachable, multidimensional beers.
When we first opened in 2011, we did so with a completely manual 15 barrel system and just 30 barrels of capacity. Within the first month Fiddlehead IPA, the flagship ale, was on tap with at over 50 bars and restaurants in Vermont.
With the immediate success, we quickly outgrew the 3,000 sq foot space that was split between retail and production. After the last fermenter was added in 2015, we knew we needed a bigger boat.
In January of 2017, our brand new 10,000 sq foot brewery opened for production just behind the tasting room. The added space meant room for more fermenters as well as some much needed upgrades like a laboratory, grain silo, office space, and our own canning line. This expansion has allowed us to increase distribution of kegs and cans within our home state, branch into New York and Massachusetts, and renovate our tasting room (coming soon!).
While we do not currently offer tours of our production facility, our knowledgeable tasting room staff is always happy to chat about our beers and the brewing process. Our beer can be found on draft or in cans at over 650 Vermont establishments as well as an increasing number of locations around Massachusetts and New York State.
The tasting room remains at the original Shelburne Rd. location, as do countless memories of where it all began.

12 oz. can, a date of some sort is stamped on the bottom but it is distorted. I believe this last release was Mid-November, so it is not old. Hazy gold color with a good amount of yeast chunks floating around. The aroma is seriously fruity with some floral notes. The flavor is rather yeasty with fruit through the center with some mild pine. Body is on the lighter side with some sweet malts. Drinks like a lower ABV IPA in the 5- 6 % range. It’s a good brew but nowhere near as awesome as this brewers “Second Fiddle”

Two separate draft samples. The fresher the better on this one. Frist sampled from a growler 29 June 2014. The dry hopping of the beer gives a really great fruit aroma with light yeasty character. The flavor was very much how it smelled, tropical fruits, and light chewy yeast body. Subtle tartness without any funk. The flavor of the hops is amplified by the yeast giving mostly pleasant fruit flavors.

I sampled again at the Reservoir, Waterbury on 11 Nov, 2014. Let just say the flavor downgrades rather quickly as it ages. A huge amount of band aides upfront with some subtle sourness in the finish. Didn’t like it at all in November but that is my palate. The rating of this brew is based on the fresh Growler I sampled in June 2014.

Bottle: Poured a pale yellow color ale with a generous pure white foamy head with excellent retention and good amount of lacing. Aroma of fresh juicy hops with nice grapefruit and tropical notes. Taste is also dominated by loads of juicy hops notes with fresh tropical fruit notes as well as some grapefruit. Body is light with good carbonation. World-class IIPA indeed with almost no bitterness and loads of fresh hops juice.

In the can @ home, thanks to Luke and Josh for sending! Pours a murky yellow orange appearance with a big khaki head. The aroma is nice. Some onion and garlic to go with mango/peach puree. Medium body. A bit thick mouth feel. Actually, pretty dry. Nice 8.1% boost that’s hidden well. Juicy tropical fruits to go with some herbal and spicy notes. Hops are nicely done. Little bitterness noticeable. A little doughy. Pretty danged tasty.

Can from MrBarleywine, thanks for the opportunity! Dark straw color with a decent sized bubbly white head that sticks itself to the glass on the way down. Pine, green onion, resin with faint tropical fruit hop aromas especially at initial pour. Malt, yeah maybe a hint of bread or cracker. The flavor does hold a bit more maltiness but there is a solid hit of pine and resin and just a touch of tropical fruitiness. 8.1 % but extremely quaffable. I quite like this beer, second fiddle is a bit better in my opinion, but I could never turn this beer down.

Keg at The Reservoir - Waterbury, VT. Pours clear yellow-gold with a creamy, white head. The nose holds pale citrus fruits, pale bread, some anise, pine needles. Medium sweet flavor with some lightly dried citrus, in particular tangerine and grapefruit, with pale bready malts beneath. Medium bodied with fine to average carbonation. Lightly resinous on the finish with further pale malt sweetness, low bitterness, nicely juicy and citrusy hops. Very, very well balanced. Solid.

Can from a few weeks back kept cold. Pale yellow appearance with a huge fluffy bubbly head that fades slowly. Smells like straight up cat pee. sorry brewers but smells like citra and Simcoe early addition hops? Thin, very light for an 8.1% beer. Lots of citrus, some birch wood and pine cone. Earthy mulch and fruity finish.
