Description
The Tollgate Brewery story began in 2005 on the old Woodville site of Brunt, Bucknall & Co, known as the Wooden Box Brewery, the first brewery to be established in the Burton area in 1832. Woodville was formerly Wooden Box, named after the famous toll booth on the road between Ashby de la Zouch and Burton-upon-Trent. The area around the Woodville roundabout (the modern equivalent of the toll booth) is still known as ‘Tollgate’ from which our brewery takes its name.

In 2012 Tollgate Brewery relocated to the National Trust Calke Abbey Estate due to a strong desire from the team at Calke Abbey and the National Trust to bring brewing back to the Estate. In January 2016 a change of ownership brought together the current brewery team. Tollgate Brewery currently occupies one of the National Trust’s farm buildings built in the nineteenth century. We’re a 6-barrel brewery using traditional brewing techniques that would be recognisable to those early brewers in the 1800’s.

Cask at Lych Gate, Wolverhampton. Pours a dark reddish brown with a medium sized foamy cream head and good lacing. There’s roast malts in the aroma along with spices and raisins. Malts again to the fore in the mouth together with dates, figs and overripe apples. More flavours emerge later – dark fruits and hints of chocolate and liquorice, leading to a fruity and spicy finish. This is a decent stout.

Bottled version, 4.3%. Thanks Simon! Grainy fruity beginning. Easy to drink, fruity with a very dry and grainy finish. Mild, grainy, dry and rough. Grain, nice bittered, fruity. Interesting, rich, sessionable.

Handpull cask at the Queens Road Tap, Leicester. Chestnut brown, mostly clear with a full off-white/beige head. Malty aroma, light notes of caramel. Taste is more complex than the aroma suggests. Sweet and with deep toffee notes, some stone fruit. Some light sourness mid-sipwith vanilla notes. Finishing with a balanced character and some fig. £250m for the coronation, at least were getting a couple of decent beers out of it.

Keg draught at the Queens Road Tap, Leicester. Dark gold and clear with a rudimentary white head. Malty and a bit gluey with pine and grassy notes. Balanced taste with some hoppy bitterness in the long clean finish. Medium body with heavy as hell carbonation. Very enjoyable beer from Tollgate.

Gravity cask at the GBBF Winter 2023 Festival, day 2 at Burton On Trent Town Hall, 17/02/23. Extremely dark mahogany brown with a beige cap that settles as a swirl. Nose is fruit cake mix, brown sugars, hint of nail polish, cocoa powder. Taste comprises chocolate, dried fruit rinds, sugary, vinous, sweet edged. Medium plus bodied, soft carbonation, semi drying close with a kick of alcohol. Passable impy ... lacking balance overall and too sweet for me.
