Description
The Tollgate Brewery story began in 2005 on the old Woodville site of Brunt, Bucknall & Co, known as the Wooden Box Brewery, the first brewery to be established in the Burton area in 1832. Woodville was formerly Wooden Box, named after the famous toll booth on the road between Ashby de la Zouch and Burton-upon-Trent. The area around the Woodville roundabout (the modern equivalent of the toll booth) is still known as ‘Tollgate’ from which our brewery takes its name.

In 2012 Tollgate Brewery relocated to the National Trust Calke Abbey Estate due to a strong desire from the team at Calke Abbey and the National Trust to bring brewing back to the Estate. In January 2016 a change of ownership brought together the current brewery team. Tollgate Brewery currently occupies one of the National Trust’s farm buildings built in the nineteenth century. We’re a 6-barrel brewery using traditional brewing techniques that would be recognisable to those early brewers in the 1800’s.

440ml can drunk in the Queens Road Tap, Leicester. Dark gold and slightly mazy with a tiny film of white head. Light fruity hop aroma, grassy notes, some gluey yeast. Sweet taste, sweet with a heavy malt presence. More bitterness in the medium to long finish. Grassy character again in the aftertaste. Carbonation on the heavy side. It's okay.

Handpull cask at the Queens Road Tap, Leicester. Middle of the road gold, clear with a small film of white head. Caramel and biscuits aroma with some pomelo and Lotus spread. Sweet taste, a little toffee-sickly, with some astringency in the finish. Light oily body with soft natural carbonation. A good honest beer, maybe not for me though and a half is more than enough.

440ml can at the Queens Road Tap, Leicester. Mid-gold, slightly hazy with a decent little white head. Light grassy aroma, getting less of the Citra and Olicana than I'd expected. Sweet taste with light tropical fruit character and some herbal flavours. Bitterness in the finish. Medium body, very heavy carbonation. A bit of an odd one, trying to get my head around it.

Handpull cask at the Queens Road Tap, Leicester. Light to mid-gold, clear with a foamy off-white head and good lacing. Light grainy aroma, a little astringent,a little vanilla. Sweet malt taste with honeyed character gives way to a bitter medicinal note which isn't overly dominant but certainly provides good balance. Finishes quite bitter though. Oily body, fairly substantial for the ABV, with soft carbonation. Okay.

Cask at Robin Hood, Willenhall. Pours a golden yellow with an ample foamy white head and good lacing. There are malts and grains in the nose, but not to any great extent. In the mouth it has summer fruits to the fore, along with floral hops and a hint of citrus. All overlaid on a biscuity base. The finish is slightly bitter. Nice and refreshing.

Cask at Old Bell, Derby. Poured a very pale straw with minimal white head. Mainly biscuits in the aroma together with some cereal grains. In the mouth it is pretty sweet with honey, fruits, grasses and general floral flavour. The finish is sweet and dry. A welcome change from the normal pale ale or session IPA.

Draught keg at the Queens Road Tap, Leicester. Almost black, opaquewith a touch of off-white head. Slightly floral aroma, some vanilla, but not a lit of orange really. Taste is more white chocolate and orange blossom notes with French vanilla flavours. Very sweet with just a touch of bitterness in the finish. Slight body, medium to heavy carbonation. I like it but it doesn't exactly do what it says on the tin.
