Description
Following in the footsteps of thousands of women who have brewed through the millennia, Sara Barton founded Brewster’s Brewing Company and the first beers flowed in 1998.

Over eons and through civilisations, women had brewed beer as naturally as they baked and nurtured their families. In recent centuries though, a woman’s role within the brewing craft had changed. Old fashioned societal norms and industrialisation had turned women away from being the natural brewers of beer. In modern times things have been changing and thankfully the world is different now; the new age of the Brewster is dawning.

After equipping herself with a Masters degree in Brewing and Distilling from Heriot Watt in 1989, Sara was to join the tiny band of female pioneers working in the brewing world and then in time she took the step to lead her own brewing company.

Sara took the name Brewsters for the brewery as it was an old English word for a female brewer. In the mid nineteen nineties when Brewster’s brewery was started it was a term seldom used or even understood.

Brewster’s brewery is now a 32 hectolitre (or 20bbl if you are old school) single infusion brewhouse located in Grantham, Lincolnshire. Cask conditioned ales predominate but brewery conditioning is developing to be an important element for the brewery and allows other beer styles such as kegged beers and canned small pack to develop. The small batch size gives scope for great variety in styles.

Brewsters Coffee Porter. Very dark brown with a bubbly head. More sweet fruits than any true porter style, but its good at being what it is - tasty.

Cask at the Moon Under Water (JDW), Watford on 24 October. Poured a clear dark ruby colour with a thin, off white head and excellent lacing. Aroma of malt, coriander and orange peal, which was all a little at odds. Caramel and aniseed flavours mixed with some grassy hops. Finish was slightly astringent, but with some nice lingering dark malt and dry grain. Tried a little too hard, perhaps?

Cask at the Montague Pyke (JDW), London. Cola coloured with a ring of translucent head; floral aroma; soft, floral flavour with some licorice; then a dry anfd gently bitter finish. Not exactly memorable.

Cask at JDW Charlie Hall; dark chestnut pour with creamy off white head, quite floral aroma, distinctive grapefruit taste with a hint of coffee, not sure if it’s a porter but it’s a decent drink.

Cask @ The Foot of the Walk, Leith [031113]
Dark caramel brown, thin dense beige head, good lacing
Aroma of soft grapefruit hops, light floral hops, soft dark malts, dab of chocolate, good aroma
Taste of soft grapefruit hops, floral notes, nice mellow citrus with good soft dark chocolate underneath, touch of dark fruits, mellow dark malts, very well balanced
Palate - Thin to medium body, light texture. Finish - more soft bitter citrus and getting a touch of roast now, nice quick wave of bitter citrus in tail. Perhaps a little thin but has a good flavour profile
Overall - Superb ’light’ black IPA, soft, well crafted. Yes - subtle beers can be excellent. Great ’sessionable’ Black IPA. Yes - it’s better than the Adnams / Stone collab. Way more drinkable and just better balanced when trying them at the same time

Cask at Victoria Station Spooneria, 24/10/13. Dark mahogony brown with a thin light tan head that dissipates edgeward - she’s no looker but I’ll have a drink with her anyway! Nose is light roast, light tropical fructis, hoppy backnotes, hint of pine. Taste comprises cocoa powder, light spice, fruits, hoppy tones. Medium bodied, moderate carbonation, hop notes in the finale. So so porter could even run as a low grade CDA!

Cask at The moon under water Watford jdw. Dark amber copper colour with a thin loose off white head. Aroma is west coast IPA, lemon pine earth hops. Hint of dark malts. Flavour is light caramel malt, then the hops. Somewhat muddled citrus pine and grass. Finish is earthy roast. Medium body and carbonation. Plthis is closer to a black IPA than a porter in my humble opinion. Perhaps they have invented a whole new style the India porter ale. That is a bit of a mouth full so let’s abbreviate that to IPA.

Cask at the Victoria Station Spoons - London. Pours clear, red-brown with a slight, tan foam head. The aroma has a hefty dose of burnt pine to go with the roasted malts. Light sweet flavor with lots of bitter, burnt pine, well roasted malts, some coffee, minerals. Light to medium bodied with soft to fine carbonation. Dry minerality on the finish, bittersweet cocoa, roasted malts, bitter pine, faint resins. Good stuff.

Cask handpull at Lord Moon of the Mall Spoons. Very dark brown almost black beer lasting cream head. Some coffee some chocolate. The citra and galaxy do give it a tropical fruit flavour no doubt. Soft finish. Pretty tasty. It’s like slices of citrus fruit dipped in milk chocolate. I liked it.
