Description
Gage Roads is the strip of ocean that separates Rottnest Island and Fremantle in Western Australia. It’s a home to surfers and swimmers; seagulls and sharks; ships and sailors. It’s a place where you can relax, escape, explore, or seek out adventure. We saw a lot of ourselves in that little spot. That’s why we named our brewery after it.

We set up shop in an old margarine factory just outside Freo over 14 years ago and we’ve been crafting beer there ever since. We make a range of ales and lagers, all of which are inspired by our place here on the WA coast.

Can. Black with a tan head that lasts well. Promising bitter mocha aroma with some bread and light spices. Softish but maybe slightly chalky texture. Lots of coffee, some sweeter chocolate, minor roast, bread. Not very sweet and then dry and a bit bitter at the end. Agreeable weight - quaffable but with substance. Redemption going pretty well.

330ml bottle from Monster and Beer, Petaling Jaya, Malaysia. Poured a crystal clear golden colour with a mostly lasting frothy white head. The aroma is malt and cardboard lager yeast. The flavour is moderate bitter, with a light, crisp, malt, light nutty, hop bitter palate. Medium bodied with average carbonation. As far as lagers go, this wasn't bad and certainly better than many of the macro brewed versions.

330ml can from Monster and Beer, Petaling Jaya, Malaysia. Poured a hazy medium amber colour with a mostly lasting frothy white head. The aroma is grainy malt, light toffee, citrus fruits. The flavour is moderate bitter, light sweet, with a fresh, crisp, malt, light metallic, light citrus, woody hop bitter palate and a lingering bitter finish. Medium bodied with average carbonation. It was ok and refreshing, but there isn’t anything that makes this stand out from the crowd.

330ml can from Monster and Beer, Kuala Lumpur. Poured a slightly hazy golden colour with a short-lived, fizzy white head. The aroma is malt, light citrus fruits. The flavour is light bitter sweet, with a fresh, light, watery, crisp, light citrus, light hop bitter palate. Light bodied with average carbonation. For a short while after the can was opened, there was a little carbonation, but minutes later that was gone and it was like drinking flavoured water. Not good at all.

Can. Slightly unclear golden amber with a modest white head. Aroma of kumquat, breadcrust, spiced pine. Just medium bodied. Some bread with citrus and minor stone fruit notes, then moody resin creeps in before furnish bitterness. Everything’s got room to move, it’s well-balanced and drinks its strength. Good stuff.

Pint on tap at Beer Deluxe, Barangaroo. Malty umami nose, a little hoppy freshness in there. Golden amber beer with a thin white head. Slight haze, very occasional bubble. Solid lacing, slight fizz. Lots of caramel first up, becomes cleaner and greener later. Lingering finish is sweet with herbal/aniseed notes. Nice beer, but still I ask 'What is an XPA?'

Bottle. Pours hazy straw with airy white head. Clear aroma of hops and citrus, with floral and fruity touches. Citric flavour with bitter touches of hops and sweetish notes of yeast and malt. Citric and estery aftertaste. Reasonable but rather tame.
