Description
Gage Roads is the strip of ocean that separates Rottnest Island and Fremantle in Western Australia. It’s a home to surfers and swimmers; seagulls and sharks; ships and sailors. It’s a place where you can relax, escape, explore, or seek out adventure. We saw a lot of ourselves in that little spot. That’s why we named our brewery after it.

We set up shop in an old margarine factory just outside Freo over 14 years ago and we’ve been crafting beer there ever since. We make a range of ales and lagers, all of which are inspired by our place here on the WA coast.

Bottle, 4.5%. OK refreshing hop aroma. Some paper. Almost clear golden colour. Small stable white head. The flavour is malty and papery, has some sweet and overripe fruit. Watery finish.

Can. Honey amber is a good descriptor. A cm of white head that lasts really well. Beckoning rather than vibrant aroma of dried mango, light biscuit, pine needles, pineapple. 7+ Just medium bodied with a slight pleasant creaminess. Enough light bready malt to support the hops. Just a slight caramel edge to it. Not really sweet with waves of stone fruit then citrus (mandarin, grapefruit) and resin towards a dry and fairly bitter end. Impressive.

Pours crystal clear amber with a fading headNose shows peach, apricot, clean malt, piny and resinous hops, pineapple.Flavours include sweet clean malt, pineapple, floral hops, peach, resinous notes, soft cookie-dough malt notes, and mango. The heavy tropical fruit and fair whack of malt pushes this more on the sweet side.

Can. Pale orange, hazy. White head fades so as to leave a coat less an X. Perhaps that's what an XPA is. Aroma of marmalade citrus, light bread, some mango. pineapple. Light bodied, highish carbonation. Tastes much as it smells. Not that sweet but finish doesn't quite snap - wanted to be a tad drier at the end?

330ml can from Bucket Boys, Marickville. Pale yellow gold colour, short-lived bubbly white foam head and aroma of sweet apple, fruity, yogurty, hint of sick. Taste is sweet, fruity apple, pineapple & passionfruit notes, yogurty, sugary. Syrupy mouthfeel, medium bodied, spritzy carbonation, sweet finish. Too sweet for me.

Special release celebrating 15 years of brewing. 500ml can. Deep gold with a white head that fades gradually. Grainy aroma with grass and light spices. Light bodied. Fizzy. Clean but empty with modest but nagging bitterness.

Can. Gold with a large white head. Short of vibrantly hoppy aroma of passionfruit, orange, a little mango, bread. But the sweet tropical fruits - maybe some pineapple too - pop a little more upon a taste. It's clean and fairly light with a dryish but not very bitter finish. A bit too fruit cup -like for me, but not bad.
