330ml bottle into glass. Nose is chocolate, malt, fruit. Opaque brown beer with thin film on top. Light and fizzy in the mouth. Finish is bitter with late dark chocolate and even later fruit. Very ’adult’ brown ale.

Draft at Taps Beer Bar, Changkat. 3.5% ABV. Poured a clear reddish brown with a long lasting frothy white head. The aroma is fruity resin hop. The flavour is moderate bitter with a crisp light refreshing hoppy, light metallic palate. Medium to light bodied with average carbonation.

Can (Gordon’s). Pale gold with a fine white head. Straightforward but vibrant aroma of passionfruit, pine, grapefruit, hay. 7+ Although there’s a minor chewy/ grassy note that could be the oats, there’s not much exotic about the malt side of things and the beer charges straight towards the mainly citrusy hops. Bitterness is on the high side of medium. Hits the spot on a hot night.

On tap at the Local, St. Kilda. They had it titled "The Beast." Dark brown. Creamy, smooth coffee and refined milk 75% chocolate. A touch of alcohol in the finish lends it some heft late. Dessert in a glass, a nice balance of approachable impy that is rich enough to satisfy.

This one’s not a looker, with a pale straw colour and a pretty mad carbonation. The aroma’s unappealing too with a bready, grainy flavour dominating, and although the hops are pleasantly bitter in the mouth, the malt is bordering on cloyingly sweet. A disappointing effort from the Mornington team.
