Pours black with ruby highlights and a small lasting head.Nose shows dark chocolate, chocolate liqueur, roasted malt and nutty notes. Nice stuff.Similarly rich flavours, lots of liquorice, roasted coffee and cocoa. A little full on and brash however.Could use a fuller, creamier texture.

Tap. Cloudy yellow with a lovely creamy white head that. Aroma of banana, vanilla, lemon. Taste is sweet with banana and vanilla, then a decent wheaty tang. Cloves and white pepper come out at the finish. A little sweet and banana-heavy for me, but fine.

Tap. Dark brown with a small light tan head. Modest aroma is fruity with a hint of roast malt and a fair bit of chocolate. Medium-bodied and very smooth. Taste is slightly sweet with some roast, licorice, chocolate, pears, banana, light spices.

Bottle, 12C. Dark brown with a light tan head that fades to a coat. Aroma is very chocolatey with light roasted malt and coffee, some condensed milk, hazelnuts. Very smooth. Taste is again chocolatey, but not that sweet with some slight coffee astringency and quite a bit of bitterness. A little overhopped for me, but an elegant drop.

From a 330ml bottle on 24/8/2011. Pours an opaque cola colour with a modest head. Has a mainly chocolatey aroma with a hint of berries. Flavour wise, chocolate again dominates, and there is some sugary toffee, along with some nuttiness. Has a nice balancing bitterness. All up, a good beer.

Pours dark amber with a large, fading head.Nose shows resinous pine as well as some nectarine. Also lots of caramel and some cookie dough-like malt. Not particularly hoppy.Very malty flavours, quite rich and heavy, lots of caramel. Hops are mainly noticeable in the aggressive, piny bitterness.Could use more carbonation and a lighter body. Very syrupy.

[8/11] Tap (growler). Amber with a light beige head. Aroma of peaches, nectarines, kumquats, pine. Full, somewhat oily mouthfeel. Taste is initially sweet with stone fruit and caramel, then first citrus then pine bitterness kicks in. Quite aggressive resinous bitterness builds up over a glass and if there’s any finesse there it got elbowed out of the way. But this is pretty solid stuff. [3.4][3/15] Can. A little less aggressive at the end and maybe slightly drier. More harmonious drinking but the hops don’t scissor through the sweetness so well. [1/17] One of the reasons I like MP is the work they clearly put in on improving their core beers. Haven’t revisited this as much as the pale, but the same thing is going on. The hops aren’t crude but they cut through to solid bitterness at the end. The aroma’s cheerful. There’s heft - seems more like 7% - but not a lot of residual sweetness.

Bottle. Quite a dark brown with a beige head. Aroma of toffee, dried fruit, chocolate, some nuts. Rich and smooth-textured. Tastes pretty much as it smells with a little plain bitterness reining in the sweetness. No complaints, but not very interesting.

Pours dark brown with ruby highlights and a small head.Nose shows chocolate and nutty malt. Big hazelnut praline character. A bit faint though.More chocolate and nutty malt as flavours, also a hint of coffee. Could use some crystal to add some caramel notes.

Pours dark amber with a large, lasting head.Nose shows tropical fruit, resinous hops and lots of sweet clean malt. Textbook new-world pale ale.Similar amount of malt upon tasting, very sweet, lots of caramel. The hops are not forgotten, with more tropical fruit and resin. Finishes with a bold bitterness that can’t quite keep the malt in check.Carbonation could be higher to dry out the finish a little.
