Cask handpump at The Dispensary, Liverpool, 29-11-08. Pours pale golden with a thin white head. There is a little bit of brine or seawater on the nose and maybe some vanilla as well (strange combination I know) Smooth in the mouth, some vanilla again with creaminess and sweetness, bit soft on the palate. I like this a lot. A7 A5 F7 P4 OV14 3.7

Cask, Dispensary, Liverpool. Very dark mahogany tinged brown colour wiith a lingering, creamy, muddyish tan head. Sweet caramel malt very prominent in the aroma; demerara sugar and dark rum were there also, as in the flavour. Very warming and smooth. Am a lover of dark rum, which is my favourite spirit, so this had obvious appeal. Had never tasted a rum flavoured beer before, and thought this worked really well.

Cask-conditioned at the Wellington, Birmingham 12/08/08. Opaque black with next to no head. Sweetish, roasted malt aroma. Flavours of dark fruit, a hint of liquorice and a short, dry finish. Despite the ABV, was a lot more subdued than the same brewery’s 4.5% Duke of York tried at the same time. Merely ok.

Cask-conditioned at the Wellington, Birmingham 12/08/08. This was recorded as 4.2% ABV in the pub, but every other source claims it is 4.5%. Opaque black with a moderate tan head. Bog aroma of coffee, liquorice and dark chocolate. Full mouth feel with plenty of bitter chocolate and roasted malt and a decent dry finish. Very enjoyable.

Cellar run cask condition Ship & Mitre BF April 08. Gold colour. No great aroma. Decent in mouth. It’s ok. Strong golden beer with drying finish which increases as it goes on. Some sharp fruit on aroma. OK but not really distinctive.
