Description
Housed beneath The Rat and Ratchet and since the very first brew of Lab Rat in 2011, head brewer, Paul Spencer and brewer Robin Moss, have created rodent themed beers to critical acclaim. Our beers are distinctive, extreme, generally intensely hopped and anything but average, experimenting with a range of different beer styles, strengths and ingredients. Rat beer is now infecting all four corners of the UK faster than the Black Death, turning a local infestation into a national plague. White Rat in particular has emerged as the flagship beer and now sits within the Ossett core range.

Cask at Hops, Crewe. Pours a cloudy golden yellow with a strong white head, which remains. Nose is the usual banana and bubble-gum mix of a wheat beer. Banana again in the mouth mixed with oranges and just a little bit of spicyness. More fruit and sspices in the finish – pear drops and peaches. This is a nice beer – but it’s difficult to swig !

Cask at Hops, Crewe Rat are one brewery I will always make a beeline for if they are on the bar, because they have proved they consistently brew good beers. Names and images are great as well, though I must admit I’m getting a bit tired of the endless variety. Anyway, this oen pours a clear golden yellow with a small white head and good lacing. The nose is woody / piney / sprucey. In the mouth it is creamy and hoppy with vague hints of citrus. The finish is hops and lemons. Reasonable beer without much distinguishing features.

Two hand-pulled cask pints in The Cock Hotel on 21st Sep 2019. Clear golden pour, white crown with lacing. Really enjoyed this brew, didn't find any shortbread or porridge aromas or tastes, but I liked the piney hops and the overall taste which was semi-sweet.

Half-pint, on cask at Hop in Wakefield. Clear amber coloured body, nitro creamy white head, spotty lacing. Moderate dark malt-driven aromas, mid-sweet. Taste of liquorice alongside moments of fruity hops. Ends malt-fruity. Creamy mouthfeel. Satisfying (04.07.2019).
