Description
Barney’s started brewing at Summerhall in July 2012 in time to supply the venue’s Royal Dick Bar for the Fringe, but Barney himself began brewing aged 16 as a brewery apprentice. After bagging a first class degree in Brewing and Distilling at Heriot Watt University and packing in a high flying career promoting rum and whisky around the world, Barney decided it was high time he started to brew his own beer.

In doing so, his immaculate microbrewery has injected new life into Edinburgh’s brewing history, not least because he’s chosen to resurrect a brewery at Summerhall where beer has been brewed off and on for three centuries.

Bottle from Inverurie Whisky Shop. It pours lightly hazy pale gold with a small white head. The aroma is fresh, lemon curd, lemongrass, some toasty grain and white bread. The taste is crisp, dry, straw, lemon peel, touch of grapefruit, some soap and cracker with a dry finish. Light - medium body and average carbonation. Easygoing stuff.

On keg at the Southern. Appearance - golden amber with a thin head. Nose - light toffee. Taste - toffee, light biscuit. Palate - light to medium bodied with a creamy texture and a finish that could be fresher. Overall - I’d prefer for this style for the finish to be cleaner. I couldn’t pick this out from a line up of bitters.

Bottle. Hazy gold with quite a bit of head. Quite a lot of carbonation too. Nice looking beer. Aroma is very sweet and malty. Very delicate and rather peculiar. Caramel and syrup aromas also present. No hops at all to be detected... Aroma isn?t bad but very weird for an IPA. Mouthfeel is smooth and creamy, flavour is quite bitter and the hops is grassy and floral. Finishes grassy, dry and malty.

330ml bottle from Cork & Cask. Pours clear amber with a pillowy white head. Aromas of light tropical fruit, light malt. Taste is a little plasticky, fruit is there though, and a light sweetness. The plastic lingers, and then it finishes chalky.
