Description
Barney’s started brewing at Summerhall in July 2012 in time to supply the venue’s Royal Dick Bar for the Fringe, but Barney himself began brewing aged 16 as a brewery apprentice. After bagging a first class degree in Brewing and Distilling at Heriot Watt University and packing in a high flying career promoting rum and whisky around the world, Barney decided it was high time he started to brew his own beer.
In doing so, his immaculate microbrewery has injected new life into Edinburgh’s brewing history, not least because he’s chosen to resurrect a brewery at Summerhall where beer has been brewed off and on for three centuries.

Bottle from Vino Wines. Hazy golden body with a thin white head. Steady carbonation. Light lacing. Aroma of pine, orange and lychee - some herbs too. Flavour of grapefruit, underripe pear and grass. Medium body with an oily texture. Soft fizz. A really juicy beer - lovely stuff. I just wish it was a bit stronger... at 4.8%, it’s not really an IPA, is it?

Bottle at the hotel in Edinburgh. Pours deep brown-black with a large, frothy beige head. Lovely aroma with rich smoked malt character, some cocoa, earth. Light sweet flavor with further dark, smoked malts, nips of peat, burnt herbs, crispy bacon. Light to medium bodied with fine to average carbonation. Well balanced finish with more smoke, semi-sweet chocolate, dark berries and scorched earth. Very good.
