Description
Barney’s started brewing at Summerhall in July 2012 in time to supply the venue’s Royal Dick Bar for the Fringe, but Barney himself began brewing aged 16 as a brewery apprentice. After bagging a first class degree in Brewing and Distilling at Heriot Watt University and packing in a high flying career promoting rum and whisky around the world, Barney decided it was high time he started to brew his own beer.

In doing so, his immaculate microbrewery has injected new life into Edinburgh’s brewing history, not least because he’s chosen to resurrect a brewery at Summerhall where beer has been brewed off and on for three centuries.

Bottle from the Deeside Drink’s Emporium. It pours deep brown with a medium light tan head. The nose is rich smoke, honey roast ham, Asian-style pork, light roast, leather and tobacco. The taste is smokey, rich earthiness, black tea, roasted malt, bacon frazzles, light caramel, liquorice, faint astringency and a touch of acidity with a dry, bitter finish. Medium body and moderate carbonation. Interested and pretty well-executed.

330ml bottle from Provenance, Edinburgh. Clear gold pour, nice white head. Big hop aromas, touch of butterscotch, but not too much. Taste has a malt backbone behind the big citrus and pine notes. bitter finish, not bad.

33cl bottle from Provenance Wines. Appearance - between very dark brown and black. There’s a chink of light getting in which produces a red chink on the edges Looks good. And a lovely generous head. Nose - smoke and the faintest hint of milk chocolate. Taste - more of the same. Get the smoke but not the tea. Palate - medium bodied with a dry texture which lasts through to the finish. Overall - another one that tails off at the end.

33cl bottle from Provenance Wines. Appearance -opaque black with a generous fawn head. Nose - dark chocolate with a little bit of creaminess in the background. Taste - more dark chocolate but with a dry maltiness following it in. Palate - medium bodied but then slightly too astringent for my taste. Overall - it looked and smelt good but then fell away.

Poured by gravity @ NERAX North cask festival. 11/16/2013 Haverhill, MA. Pale straw color, no head. Nose is light pale malt, citrus hops and bread. Taste is far from an IPA. Flavor mirrors the nose. Lots of bread malt with weak, subtle fruit and citrus notes. Texture is sweet and sticky. Works as American Pale but when I see IPA I am expecting hops and bitterness. This lacks both.
