Description
It all began with a 27 year old brewer, a windowless apartment, and a mountain of credit card debt. Phillips’ first brews were about as unconventional as his financing structure. In the conservative beer climate of 2001 the brewery launched with an Espresso Stout, a Raspberry Wheat Ale, and a boldy-hopped IPA; a suitable foreshadow for the creativity to come.

Since then Phillips has moved out of the apartment and into a more brewing-appropriate facility (with windows) closer to town. We have launched a soda company, a distillery, and most recently a malting facility–the only one of its kind in Canada.

Pineapple and orange juice. Golden pour with decent head. Malty, some caramel. Bitter finish. With some tanginess, a touch of sweetness. Traders Cove is a better IPA. Tap at brewery.

Light citrus and some coriander hint like curry for white people. Hazy blonde pour with decent head and lacing. Tangy bitter finish. Tap at Beercade.

473mL can, pours a hazy bright amber orange with a large white head with long retention. Aroma bursts with tropical fruits, especially mango and guava, along with bright citrus hops, and oats. Flavour is bright and juicy, with lots of juicy tropical notes -- again, lots of guava and mango -- with a powerful citrus hop character, not too much chalk, and a caramel malt base that holds things together. Amply hopped, very juicy, and minimal chalk. A very well-done hazy, all the more surprising that Phillips did this.

semi malty nose with some citrus fruit but directionless nose. Malty mouth with some fake citrus notes. Pretty bad.

Can from The Gull, North Vancouver
Murky blond colour. Aroma of tropical hops, light vanilla, light oats. Good ody structure; it has some creamy oats, quite good hopping, with some tropical accent, bitter citrus peel, and balanced bitterness, mostly coming in the finish.
Well done.

473ml can. Pours an opaque black with a medium, creamy, long lasting, tan head that laces. Aroma of roasted malt, dark chocolate and earth. Sweet flavour of roasted malt, dark chocolate, ash, earth and light smoke in a dry, bitter espresso finish. Light to medium body with a creamy, velvety smooth, oily texture and soft carbonation. Light in ABV, but big on flavour.

Medium clear gold body and okay foam. Sharp armpitty hop aroma, lemon zest, a bit of caramel. Taste is fruity hops, soft sour notes, ends with a bit of carbonation and yeast. Not bad, simplistic but has a fruity funky angle to it.
