Half-liter Grölsch bottle, $2.99 at Binny’s. Swingtop bottle opens with a nice pop, then kicks up a big head of foam poured down a straight lager glass. Nice sweet malty smell that I’d usually expect to find in an English strong ale, as the foam settles to a nice pillow. Beer is hazy, and shows a lot of bubbles clinging to the side of the glass. English ale sweetness is apparent in the first sip. But you do notice the low carbonation level and a certain bread dough flavor from the yeast that wasn’t filtered in the bottle. There is yeast sediment in the bottle, and as I poured further down, my beer got darker and hazier. This is not a style we run across very often, and it can still take some getting used to. It is somewhat warming after a while, being as it is higher in alcohol for a German non-bock lager. I can see why they would offer this as a holiday seasonal.

Bottled (thanks Timo A!). Golden colour with some grey notes, small white head. Aroma is a bunch of honey, some hay, wheat and mild notes of citrus fruits. Flavour is honey, wheat, malts and some bready notes as well. Aftertaste is honey, wheat and some hay.

(bottle) Cloudy, orange-golden colour with a big and blond, slowly lacing foamy head. Moderately sweet and slightly yeasty and grainy wheat-malty aroma with distinctive notes of banana and light notes of cloves. Moderately sweet and minimal acidic flavour, light to medium bodied with a slightly crispy mouthfeel. Slightly grainy and yeasty wheat-malty taste with notes of banana and a tinge of citrus and mild spicy notes; medium-dry, slightly sweet and sour fruity finish. A typical contemporary Hefeweizen of decent quality. 23.XI.09

Swing-top bottle. Earthly barley malt aroma. Pale yellow color with nice head. Strong barley malt flavor with a moderate grassy hops finish. Nice, enjoyable beer.

Bottle thanks to bu11zeye. Pours with a fading white head over a clear golden body. Aroma of milk soaked raisin bran cereal. Taste is coconut, papery, cereal, bread and a bit of lactose. Medium carbonation.

Bügelverschlußflasche: Deep amber coloured, clear, big lacy beige head; solid - quite dry - fruity, toasty and malty nose; moderate bitter-sweet flavour, medium bodied, smooth; lingering soft roasty-fruity finish with a touch of cacao. Very good example of its style..........

Bügelverschlußflasche: Golden a bit unclear, lacy persistent off-white foam; unmalted barley in the sweetish-grainy nose; soft MF, sweetish flavour, sticky and medium bodied; a very light touch of bitterness is detectable in the mainly sweet-grainy finish, "disturbed" by a whiff of acidity. Maybe a good session beer, but pretty monotonous........

Bottle 33cl. @ home.Clear medium red brown color with a large, frothy, good lacing, mostly lasting, off-white to light beige head. Aroma is moderate malty, bread, roasted, caramel. Flavor is moderate to heavy sweet and bitter with a average duration. Body is medium, texture is watery to oily, carbonation is soft. [20090818]
