About
The idea of Magic Hat began where so many good ideas before it began: in a bathtub. This bathtub, located on Vermont’s Goddard College campus and devoid of a plaque of recognition, is where Bob Johnson brewed his first batch of beer. After years of honing his craft, Bob was finally ready for the big time. Soon after he realized his readiness, he re-met Alan Newman, a serial entrepreneur with whom Bob had worked in a past life. Bob told Alan of his plans and before a handshake could take place, the two were jet-setting to the West Coast for research.
Upon their return to Burlington, Bob and Alan began their search for a space to call their own. That search landed them in an abandoned factory on Flynn Avenue in Burlington’s South End, where Bob would finally brew Bob’s First, Magic Hat’s debut ale and, soon after, the first batches of #9, Fat Angel and Blind Faith.
Admin Note: In July 2020, Magic Hat sold their production facility and broke ties with the state of Vermont. All beers are brewed at the FIFCO owned Genesee Brewing facility in Rochester, NY.

A large, light brown, creamy, glass lacing head formed over this intensely black, ruby highlighted beer. The aroma was roasted malt, molasses and chocolate with undertones of alcohol. Lightly bitter with a soft sweet finish. Very nice Stout.

2003. And for dessert, I would like to have the raspberry chocolate cheesecake and an espresso. Save this for a special dessert over the Holidays. Not for everyday. Excellent specialty beer.

This wasn't bad. The label reads "not quite pale ale" so I was maybe expecting an ESB. Not until later did I discover that this is a fruit beer. The fruitiness is there, but not so overpowering to be objectionable to those who don't like a fruit beer. Although there's nothing like a Pale Ale anywhere in this beer, it is a smooth, drinkable beer worth trying.

This honey colored beer was hard to pour a big head from. What there is, doesn't last long. Some hop with apricot aroma. Smooth light-medium body with a flavor that is well hopped, but not overly so, with a short dry finish. Nicely done alternative to the aggressivly hopped APA's.

Super dark brown in colour with a frothy light brown head. 95% opaque body. Aroma of milk chocolate, bread, yeast and caster sugar. Medium to Full-bodied; Sweet initial taste of brown sugar, molasses and plums with the spicey character of coffee, canella and roasted malt. Aftertaste actually nicely bittered from the coffee and chocolate tastes, but not overly done. Overall, the first beer that I actually enjoy from Magic Hat! Definately worth picking up, ESPECIALLY if you've liked any of their other stuff! I bought this twelve ounce bottle at Beers of the World in Rochester, New York and sampled it on 19-December-2003.

On tap at Bling Tiger, NY - I was a bit skeptical about this one, considering I'm not all that fond of their Heart of Darkness Stout, but I must admit I was really impressed - this beer is very, very, very much like Storm King, but a much thicker mouthfeel - this beer truly is "chewy" - sweet, but it has a lot of hop bitterness that actually lends itself well to the chocolate/coffee flavor going on - some cherries and plums in the mix - what's this? it burps up the taste of pine? quite odd - great if you can find it.

Slightly hazy golden colour with orange highlights and a dense white head. Very nice hoppy aroma with sweet scents and even a bit of malt...nothing wrong with the aroma. Light to medium-bodied; Sweet flavour with some grassy hop characteristics and a light malt finish. Mild aftertaste, only a bit of the sweetness shows through and leaves the mouthful fairly dry. Overall, one of my favourite Magic Hat beers, I don't like most of their other beers, so this was a welcome change. To comment on the style, if this wasn't classified as a Wheat, I would have no idea...this isn't even close to a normal Wheat style. This particular beer was brewed in November 2002. I bought this twelve ounce bottle at Beers of the World in Rochester, New York.

On draught at The Old Bay in New Brunswick, NJ. Pours a rich amber color with a very thin off-white head. The aroma is very hoppy with a hint of malt as well. Medium body, with a lot of hops and not too much malt balance to begin with, but later on there seemed to be more. The finish is short and hoppy. Not too bad.

Pale gold, thick white head. Hops and lunaria aromas's, as well as something perilously close to artificial sweetener. Taste yields apricot, bread-yeast - and that's it. How magic. Mouthfeel is like sparkling water: refreshing but empty. Oh well, well-tried. Not succeeded.
