About
The idea of Magic Hat began where so many good ideas before it began: in a bathtub. This bathtub, located on Vermont’s Goddard College campus and devoid of a plaque of recognition, is where Bob Johnson brewed his first batch of beer. After years of honing his craft, Bob was finally ready for the big time. Soon after he realized his readiness, he re-met Alan Newman, a serial entrepreneur with whom Bob had worked in a past life. Bob told Alan of his plans and before a handshake could take place, the two were jet-setting to the West Coast for research.

Upon their return to Burlington, Bob and Alan began their search for a space to call their own. That search landed them in an abandoned factory on Flynn Avenue in Burlington’s South End, where Bob would finally brew Bob’s First, Magic Hat’s debut ale and, soon after, the first batches of #9, Fat Angel and Blind Faith.

Admin Note: In July 2020, Magic Hat sold their production facility and broke ties with the state of Vermont. All beers are brewed at the FIFCO owned Genesee Brewing facility in Rochester, NY.

The aroma is fresh, malty and hoppy - a little artificial. It is amber and has a fine head. The flavor is like the aroma combined with a strong note of peach.

Thanks to VENOM for this unique IPA. The bottle has an interesting trippy feel. Pours a bright clear orange color with a very thin off-white head. Thin and quick lacing. Aroma is mostly hops and fruit, along with something that smelled like Starburst candy. Crisp and clean and a nice level of hops in the flavor, but every once in awhile a strange cotton candy-like flavor would seep through. Still it is very drinkable and a decent IPA. I look forward to trying more offerings from this brewer.

Thin looking beer with a light golden colour and a nice fluffy white head. A somewhat hoppy aroma, but just a mellow sweetness coming out of the glass. The taste is a good mix of malt and hops, but thats about it. The flavour lasts for about 3 seconds and fades away to nothing. I have disliked every Magic Hat beer i've ever had, and this one is no exception. Simply put...not a good beer by not a good brewery.

I suppose the 'red' colour they describe should be real, but my beer is definately dark brown in colour. No red, not even in highlights. A dense light brown head tops the beer as well. A very malty, chocolaty smell comes up as well. The first sip of the beer has some flavour, but after the first sip, there is no taste nor aftertaste to this beer. This is what the case was for all 3 of my previous Magic Hat beers, and I will suppose all their beers are like this. Too bad I have one more left. After that one, I will never buy Magic Hat again...seriously, save your money for something worthy for the money, such as Allagash, Victory or DogFishHead.

Dark amber in colour with darker brown highlights when held up to a light. Thin white head which sit atop is a nice addition to an already great looking beer. The smell is good, definately some hops and some smoke smell that is very noticable. This is my first of the style, so hopefully it wont affect this rating at all. Starts out as a medium-bodied beer which sits well in the mouth, but ends up not tasting like too much, a bit of malt and a touch of hops in a somewhat smokie flavour. Not too great, but i've got the Stone Smoked Porter coming up soon, which should be a welcome change to this one. I bought this beer in a bottle at Beers of the World in Rochester, New York.

Fiery amber colour. Fruity, flowery nose – vanilla, cherry, malts, booze (this was aged in bourbon but I’ll be damned if I’m not getting more port than anything else). Assertive, wonderful aroma that you just want to fall into. The palate, however, does not measure up. It is significantly milder, foiled in part by too much fizz in the carbonation. It is less flowery, and less sweet. Still enjoyable, but it is always sad when the flavour of a beer does not measure up to the aroma. Thanks, muzzlehatch!

Strong apricot aroma, definately noticable on all levels. Great orange colour you'd expect from a nice pale ale. Good peach and apricot tones, but not enough beer tones. Some malt detected, but no hops...not a great beer.

Great red/orange colour, great smell...but a disappointingly mild taste and a completely bland aftertaste!

This most certainly has that magic hat flavor to it, but I'm not sure that's such a good thing in a stout. Small, off-white head, decent color, and an aroma that is roasty, yet lacking. There is a roasty, cocoa-like flavor to it, but it is a bit thin, as is the body and finish. A decent, very drinkable stout, but not something to go out of your way to look for.

This is a girl beer, but a pretty good girl beer. A nice, light, bbq or party kind of beer.
