So a friend of mine finds some beer in his cellar that he forgot about. We have no idea how old this bottle is, but we drank it on 6-11-08. Bottle opened with a big hiss, and when poured seems a bit over carbonated. Pours a nice black with slight brown highlights on the edges. Creamy tanish head that stuck around for a while. This beer smells amazing. Dried plums and raisins, chocolates, coffee. Taste is creamy smooth chocolate, some coffee, some fruits, a little bit of oxidation, but not horrible, and a strong roasted grain that lingers at the end. Body is medium and mouthfeel is creamy. I was surprised at how well this one held up given that its at least 2 years old and low on the alcohol side. I would have loved to tried this fresh! Yet another great brew that Magic hat wrongly decided wasn’t worthy.

I used to love this beer. Dark pour. Nose and taste of sweet malts, coffees. A little dry finish. Rated 6/8/02

Late 2004 bottle, consumed 3/31/05. Pour is a dark brown, with some blackness in the heart of it and also light mahogany influences on the edges. Initial light tan-beige head is small, and not long retained. Aroma of raisins, dates, caramel, sweet chocolate and a very easygoing roast. Not dry, aggressive and challenging, but that’s not always a bad thing. Flavor is qutie sweet and simple to start, chocolate mousse with caramel throughout, creamy, chocolate milk shakes and a touch of earthy, dry roasted malt. Hint of green-like hops juiciness/bitterness on the end. Very drinkable stuff, with a silky mouthfeel, after it breathes. Gets a little bit tiresome as I finish the bottle, it is rather simple and chocolatey, afterall.

Deep translucent red/brown body, medium cream head. Smells like a dry stout with dark chocolate and tannic roasts. Flavorwise this is definitely a sweet stout, with chocolate and toasts along with coffee, oatmeal, and unfermented sugars. Slightly medicinal, herbal finish. What this really reminds me of is a combination of Anchor Porter and Arcadia Starboard Stout, perhaps with a touch of Mackeson XXX thrown in for good measure. Perhaps a bit thin-bodied, but certainly quaffable. Thanks Dan (jah noth) for the bottle!

BottleCoffee and earthy aroma. Dark brown, creamy head. Earthy fruit flavors prevail, body is too light to carry them home though.

Deep black stout with a thick creamy moka head. Caramel and toffee with vanilla in aroma. Choclate and oatmela in mouth with light buttterscotch notes. Oily moutfeel with a rich and thick body. Very good!

Tasting while rating, bottled. Purchased in April, date notched March, so it may be past its time. Pours very dark, coppery highlights. Bubbly stoutish head that fades with thick lacing. Nice molasses smell on top of a bit of roastyness. Creamy taste counters more coffee notes. Despite that, it’s a very smooth overall package.

Jet black; dark brown, miscellaneous head, some lace. Coffee and black chocolate nose, burnt malt, roasted crusts. Taste is stale, cold coffee, with a bit of sugar, and a forgotten cigarette ashtray alongside. Sounds horrible, but it isn't really so. There's quite some hops too, but they get a battering from the roasted malts. Not really that well-bodied, but a slick mouthfeel. Long, slightly bitter, ash-like aftertaste. A pretty typical stout. Not bad by any means.

A large, light brown, creamy, glass lacing head formed over this intensely black, ruby highlighted beer. The aroma was roasted malt, molasses and chocolate with undertones of alcohol. Lightly bitter with a soft sweet finish. Very nice Stout.

Super dark brown in colour with a frothy light brown head. 95% opaque body. Aroma of milk chocolate, bread, yeast and caster sugar. Medium to Full-bodied; Sweet initial taste of brown sugar, molasses and plums with the spicey character of coffee, canella and roasted malt. Aftertaste actually nicely bittered from the coffee and chocolate tastes, but not overly done. Overall, the first beer that I actually enjoy from Magic Hat! Definately worth picking up, ESPECIALLY if you've liked any of their other stuff! I bought this twelve ounce bottle at Beers of the World in Rochester, New York and sampled it on 19-December-2003.
