Description
The idea of Magic Hat began where so many good ideas before it began: in a bathtub. This bathtub, located on Vermont’s Goddard College campus and devoid of a plaque of recognition, is where Bob Johnson brewed his first batch of beer. After years of honing his craft, Bob was finally ready for the big time. Soon after he realized his readiness, he re-met Alan Newman, a serial entrepreneur with whom Bob had worked in a past life. Bob told Alan of his plans and before a handshake could take place, the two were jet-setting to the West Coast for research.

Upon their return to Burlington, Bob and Alan began their search for a space to call their own. That search landed them in an abandoned factory on Flynn Avenue in Burlington’s South End, where Bob would finally brew Bob’s First, Magic Hat’s debut ale and, soon after, the first batches of #9, Fat Angel and Blind Faith.

Admin Note: In July 2020, Magic Hat sold their production facility and broke ties with the state of Vermont. All beers are brewed at the FIFCO owned Genesee Brewing facility in Rochester, NY.

Bottle from the brewery. Clear amber pour, small white head.
Quite malty, light grassy hops. Nothing much, but quite refreshng after a warm afternoon of yardwork.

Hazy golden pour, big rocky white head. Lovely aroma of malted wheat, lemon zest, and honey.
Some light cloves and some herbs round it all out with a light bitter finish.

Citrus hop aroma, bready malts. Regular mouthfeel. Piney, resinous finish with some more citrus. A little watery near the end. A good ipa, but pretty middle of the road.

Tap at the brewery.
Clear copper pour, with a small white head. Aroma of fruit........hard to pin it down. Pineapple, berries, pear, cherry. Quite interesting, this like a fruit punch. Very crisp, and a clean finish with a touch of tartness. Leaves you wanting more on a warm summertime patio. I was impressed, i didn’t expect much.

Bottle at 1048 Jazz and Blues, Montgomery. Bit sweetish with an aroma of peach, apricot, and notes of berries. Bit softly hopped, mild bitter. Body is medium. Not bad but a bit too much like a Fruit Beer, not enough Pale Ale.

This was a surprisingly nice find. Some of the East Coast IPA' have been lacking, but this one was a pleasure to try and buy again. Beautiful aroma, well blended bitterness and sweetness and a nice dry finish. Worth seeking out.

(Bottle 35,5 cl) Unusual brew using English top-fermenting yeast and also wheat. And then it’s a fruit beer - I would’ve guessed raspberries, but it turns out to be....apricot!!! Fully golden, unfiltered with a pretty decent head. Pronounced, dry fruit flavours and almost no sweetness. Well, not a complete pleasure. 2.5

Notes from 2/6/2009 Baby growler tucked away for too long, paired up with in season notes. Geek... must... rate. Filtered iced tea body, a little darker once it settles. Moderately spongy half inch of oatmeal head; Sporadic lace. Lavender, ginger, heather, stale cinnamon, toasty malt. Cardamom I'm really not familiar with, but Wiki says it's a relative of ginger, so I'm not totally loopy. :P Flip top growlers are the best, know that. :) Taste is initially a shadowy representation of what I smelled, but no where near as potent. Heather(or something like it)comes up first, a little ginger, white sugar, then a flush of base malt running through till the finish. Carbonation is on the lower end of average, but there doesn't seem to be any oxidation that I can detect(spices +2). Malt on the finish makes it slightly slightly dry if anything. It's gone. It's gone. It's long gone. Magic Hat makes great beers when they try.

Sweet bitter and some tart, hints of apricot and peach in funky way. Old paper ratings before Ratebeer, so why not rate them in hindsight.
