Rounded up my notes from a visit I paid to RBY in June. This is from a taster. Solid black color, with no foam. Warming alcohol smell, but does not suggest brandy nor vanilla. Some bourbon character comes in a few sips later. Almost no room for the taste of a stout, but then it finishes off with a balanced blend of vanilla and stout malt.

Just now found my notes for a couple of beers at RBY that I didn’t get around to entering here. Light brown body, a bit opaque. Belgian specialty malt and a spicy nose. Taste is a little dry up front. Then there’s a slight plum note informed by black cherry. Aromatic malt taste, and some sweetness like an alcoholic cordial,

Solid black, light ring of foam after it’s been sitting in my taster for a while. Strong espresso smell, if you like that kind of thing. Full of coffee bitterness, but a balancing sweet malt and smooth texture. It’s still a lot like drinking black coffee, but with a touch of alcohol to it.

This was just put on last night and was the first beer from the new brewer Jim Wolfer. So the servers didn’t have the information on it yet. Should it be an IPA or a Rye beer? I’ll just go by my gut. Cloudy IPA copper color, with a thin layer of foam. A big piney and catbox smell. This surely has some dry-hopping with one of the "C’s" or an Amarillo. The bitterness is the first thing on my tongue. But after that initial burn, I found a pretty drinkable IPA, with a light malt that’s had its lights punched out by a big hop smack. Hard to pick out the rye among all this hop bitterness. But I did catch a bit of pine toward the end, too.

Taster at RBY. Dark malts offer an almost heady smell for a session beer, with a slight note of vanilla somewhere in the mix. The taste has some of the sting of bitter roast malts that isn’t usually found with dark lagers. But a decently hoppy taste means all is forgiven. Bubbly, too, to keep it on the good side. A clean lager finish helps out, too.

Just finally found my notes from the March tasting. Let’s get them in before I lose them again. Can I get an A-Men? A solid, alcoholic barley wine smell. Slight hang of Belgian lace on the sides of the glass. Cloudy gold color. The taste is smooth, with an impression of slightly diluted honey. The oats just help make it that much smoother. A backburn of Pacific hops on my uvula. Fizziness is more spread out, to leave room for a slightly syrupy texture. The fact that this is making me buzzed is merely understood, rather than directly experienced.

Yow! Found these notes from the Solemn Oates tasting in what, March? Okay. Here’s a classic American Pils with honey. I just had a Rauchbier before this one, so that may affect my perception. Still, the honey was not too big in the nose when sipped from a tiny taster in my sweaty hands.. Golden, not a pale pils color. Ring of beer fizz. Taste is in the nearly exclusive domain of the Classic American Pilsener, not a lot of honey from my point of view. Tastes fine, though, with only the menu board to tell it has more alcohol than normal.

Found some notes from last month I’d better get in. Very big note of coffee roast and bitterness in the smell. Opaque black, with a thin ring of foam. Pushed by nitro, it was a nice Guinness mouthfeel. In the first sips, the coffee flavor settles on the tongue and then washes away to a nice dry stout finish.

I was told by the server that the brewmaster made this as a blend of the Summer Blonde and lemonade. Served from the tap, NOT mixed at the bar. Hazy, whitish yellow. A light ring and thin layer of foam. Slightly spicy blonde ale nose. The lemonade was not strong in the nose, but it’s there in the taste. Overwhelming sense of lemonade over a beer without much of a profile to begin with. A rare miss for Davin that comes on like Mike’s Hard Lemonade.

Draft taster at RBY. Bock brown, with a light layer of foam. A smell of fermented grape and stone fruit with leads to the question: We have prune juice, why not raisin juice? Cause that’s what I’m calling this. A slightly sour fizz, too. Dark malt taste is like a doppelbock crossed with a Leinenkugel’s Creamy Dark. But don’t let my citing of German beers fool you, this is a clean Belgian beer. A good, heady alcohol feel in the mouth, free of burning. Slight coffee finish.
