Draft at repented RB Yorktown. Nice pine and floral nose even through my mask. Creamy, thin white head, a hazy dark gold beer. Playing hop bomb. Iain from Portland Park is getting this Yorktown operation up for now. This was on the trap list before the reorganization, but this is my first time with. First fits in with the West Coat IPA idea. Hoppy, bitter pine resin, just a note of stone fruit. Bit of oat, perhaps, toward the end.

On tap at the brewpub. Pours a near clear gold with an orange hue and a tan head that dissipates to the edges. Aroma has a decent amount of citrus that is slightly bitter with a grain backbone. Flavor is similar with citrus upfront with some tropical fruit and a bit of grain underlying.

Point at RBY. More unnoticed than the Chilsner, with an amber brown body under a thin layer of Pale Ale foam. Smell is rather yeah, like a Belgian Ale. Could be the house style under best Jim Wolfer, whom I don’t believe I’ve sampled before. Taste is also yeasty, then shows up some nice today malts, even a bit of caramel. Despite the heaviness implicit in the name and description, this is a nice drinkable Ale. A much better impression of this brewer’s art.

Taster at RBY. Certainly has a big nose of jalapenos, from the moment the taster was put in front of me. Almost too much; up close it smells like the liquid left over from a ajar of peppers. Cloudy yellow color, thin head. Much as I love me my chili beer, this has overdone the peppers with little beer character to stand against it. I get a note of lime at the end, but it’s late, too late.

Solid black, with bright brown highlights at the edges. A thin creamy head that suggests oats in the grist. Caramel toast malts in the nose, but I can’t get much hop in edgewise. Has roastiness in the palate, but more like a porter. Hops tend to stick to their bitter business until some pine wanders around. Still, rather palatable for a high-BU beer. Pine hops get bigger further down.

Great American Beer Festival, 2012. This stout drinks pretty good. Black of course. Roasted malt with a hint of red wine. Good palate.
