Mug Club draft at RBY. Brassy color in the mug. One finger wide spongy head leaving lace along the rim. Sweet, orangey hop smell, with bits of spice behind. The taste starts without the usual hop burn, but then it builds a nice lupalin aftertaste. The hoppiness expands enough to almost obscure the crystal malts; in fact the malts seem a trifle thin, but there are plenty of bubbles to give a smile-inducing texture.

Draft @ FoBAB 2009, Chicago, IL. Pours a hazy dark reddish color with a small off-white head. Has a sweetish malty hoppy caramel aroma with hints of yeast and some hints of oak. Sweetish malty caramel and hoppy yeasty flavor with weak hints of vanilla and oak. Has a sweetish malty spicy caramel finish with some weak hints of bourbon.

Draft Taster. Again, I’ve been given a taste before they’ve printed a new beer menu, so details are from my server and may be subject to change. I am told this is a saison, but not the M. LaFemme, with Mango and Thai chile peppers in the mix. So this sampler is a cloudy gold color, with some suds up top. Spicy saison smell that seems to be enhanced by the additions. Chile is evident in the taste: heat is noticable, also some vegetal and the slight Malliard reaction of dried pods that have been rehydrated. But this is not overdone heat like other chile beers. Instead, it builds on the beer flavor, complemented by the somewhat neutral profile of mango. Quite tasty.

A hazed brown ale with a thin off white head. A pungeant floral hops aroma, with meaty malt notes, grapefruits and hibiscus. In mouth, a dryish and sweet malt with light balanced hops, not astringent, pleasant, smooth alcohol. On tap at Rockfest, April 25 2010.

A golden lager with a thin white head. A chally hoppy aroma with tangerine fizz notes. In mouth, a smooth hoppy lager, with light tingle, biscuitty malt, quite nice and clean. On tap at Rockfest, April 25 2010.

A reddish brown bock with a very thin off white head. A beautiful aroma of dark fruits, figs, molasses, and oaken barrel, light soy sauce. In mouth, a sweet maple banana with oaken notes, alcohol warmth, a bit thin but good. On tap at Rockfest, April 25 2010.

A hazed blonde ale with a thin white head. A nice fruity aroma of juniper, coriander, light sulfur, creamy and smooth. In mouth, a wit like sahti with cloves and gin notes, bananas, quite nice and surprising....ok so its a Belgian....still good. On tap at Rockfest, April 25 2010.

Samplers from nitro and cask. Both are deep brown, not quite black. The nitro pour has a light, stoutish tan head.The cask pour’s head is a bit darker, with "tighter" bubbles. No lacing here, just a solid wall of foam down the sides of the glasses as I drink. Both smell deeply of chocolate roast malt. Taste is a bit roasty, but the nitro push keeps the texture smooth. No alcohol detected in taste or nose, just deep roast malts that seem bitter enough to obviate much in the way of hops. The cask pour is, well. warm and a bit watery. I still am no quite used to it. Obviously I need to go the England and give a local CAMRA guide a workout, then see what I think.

Draft tulip. A small batch prepared for a Brewer/Chef dinner at RBY. Have to say it’s a great visual presentation: cloudy yellow with a big, white, pillowy head. Smell is mainly of wit, minus the usual wheat beer esters, but with a hint of dark fruit lurking in the background. Taste starts with definite Juniper and spruce spiciness. Dates start out light, more like dried "cherry raisins," then come out a little stronger, like a pulpy dark fruit juice. May be a tad too heavy to consider a "lawnmower" beer, but this is what I’d in front of me at the end of a day of summertime chores.
