Atwater currently holds true to making traditional German style lagers, along with unique boutique ales. Rieth says, “We’ve analyzed the marketplace and studied what consumers really want in a beer and have successfully provided this for them”. Atwater keeps things fun around the brewery, never taking things too seriously; a favorite slogan around here, “We drink all we can and sell the rest”. Rieth says the company recently became international when beer was shipped to Munich, Germany in a partnership with an all-American craft beer tap house. Today the brewery is thriving and expanding at its original Joseph Campau location, including a full scale Biergarten and Tap House. We recently opened Atwater in the Park which is located 8 miles from the brewery in a renovated church serving unique styles and great food, along with Atwater Spirits and Wine. Atwater in Grand Rapids opened its doors in October 2016 and is located in the renovated Rowe Hotel downtown.

Sample at the Big Tap In on 04/20/2013. Opaque brown-black pour with a medium khaki head that recedes steadily. Partial rings of lacing on the glass. Aroma of chocolate, malt and hops. Full-bodied with flavors of earthy malt, chocolate and mild hops. The finish is malty and sweet with a cocoa aftertaste. Above average overall.

bottle - Pours lightly hazy copper with a one finger head. It has a mild aroma of caramel and grainy malt with a hint of hops that slightly suggests citrus. The flavor is fairly bitter but unfortunately it’s on the watered down side. The bitter hops lack complexity. It’s okay to drink, but there are far better options for IPAs.

12oz bottle pours a slightly hazy orange with some thin, white head. Aroma is fairly standard, sweet, ripe fruit, honey, candy sugar, malt, a little cotton candy. Flavor is similar, some tropical fruit, candy sugar, malt, honey, yeast, a little bread. Medium bodied, sweet finish. One note, but unoffensive. Definitely read as a Maibock.

From a bottle it certainly appears decadent. Has a unique old world chocolate aroma. Expected it to be more bitter but this comes across pretty good. Even my wife, who doesn’t like beer said this had strong dark bitter baking chocolate undertones. At times, even a hint of sizzling tartness pokes at yer buds. AS I near the end of the bottle, I’m starting to enjoy this. Roasty wood finish like that of a campfire that was doused by a bucket of rain water. Nicely done.

12 ounce bottle from Guntown. Pours a deep brown color with a medium white head. A big nose of bakers chocolate. The flavor is really sweet in your face chocolate, light mint, fruit, a light base, OK.
