Description
“Founded in 1997, Atwater Block Brewery made its debut in Detroit, Michigan in the historic Rivertown district. The original owner’s reasoning and focus was to bring back the Bohemian style lager that Stroh’s Brewing Company had made famous in the mid 1800’s. The passion for beer started in 1848 when the first mass produced beer was bottled in the Detroit area. So although Detroit is known for being the Motor city, at one time Michigan had more production breweries than anyone in the country. Atwater wanted to re-invent that product back in 1997 of making German style Lagers. The owners purchased a Kasper Schulz, the oldest makers of brewing equipment in the world! It was purchased at a trade show in 1996 and by 1997 Atwater was producing beer!

Atwater currently holds true to making traditional German style lagers, along with unique boutique ales. Rieth says, “We’ve analyzed the marketplace and studied what consumers really want in a beer and have successfully provided this for them”. Atwater keeps things fun around the brewery, never taking things too seriously; a favorite slogan around here, “We drink all we can and sell the rest”. Rieth says the company recently became international when beer was shipped to Munich, Germany in a partnership with an all-American craft beer tap house. Today the brewery is thriving and expanding at its original Joseph Campau location, including a full scale Biergarten and Tap House. We recently opened Atwater in the Park which is located 8 miles from the brewery in a renovated church serving unique styles and great food, along with Atwater Spirits and Wine. Atwater in Grand Rapids opened its doors in October 2016 and is located in the renovated Rowe Hotel downtown.

Hazy copper body with suspended particles, thick, puffy off-white head. Piney hops plentiful in the otherwise bready, caramely nose. Notes of citrus rind. Toasty, bready body with abundant bitter, rindy pine and citrus hops, leaving a long, bitter aftertaste. Medium-bodied, fairly well-balanced. Not bad.

Orange body, hazy, medium off-white head. Toasty aroma with caramel, earthy hops, and a touch of diacetyl. Rather sharp, tart body, with caramel and lemony fruit in addition to biscuits and notes of butterscotch. Acidic and a bit funky.

Deep charcoal brown body, medium tan head. Aroma of brown sugar, toast, red grape, and cherry, very sweet and fruity. Flavor of dark fruits including cherry, brown sugar, and toast, very sweet with very little emphasis on coffee or roast. Toasty with little bitterness. Has some Hershey’s syrup characteristics with cherry added to the mix.

Deep ruby/garnet red body, medium-thick creamy, light tan head. Light chocolatey aroma, with notes of biscuit, toast, and somewhat sweet. Licorice, toast, and earthy hops dominate the body, with hints of berries or other dark fruits in the background. Light, though, and the flavors don’t quite meld together.

This beer came to me via a beer club and is not a brewery I am very fond of.+++ Sampled from a 12 oz brown bottle the beer poured a dark brown color with a small tan head that faded quickly. The scent was strongly sour and almost skunky. The flavor was light and malty with a hint of skunkyness. It did manage to taste better than it smelled. A bit of sour malt lingers on the aftertaste. Overall this is a drinkable but not particularly impressive beer.

I am generally not a big fan of this style. This came in my beer club and is a brewer that I generally am not very fond of. +++ Sampled from a 12 oz brown bottle this beer poured a straw yellow color with a large fluffy white head that produced some lacing. The aroma is light and dominated by a yeasty bready element. The texture is light and crisp but perhaps a bit thin. There is some light malt and an interesting spice character to the brew. Drinkable but not something I would seek out again.

Taken as a Lager this beer is pretty good. As a Helles it is just average. Pours a clear golden color with lots of small bubbles. Thin white head with minimal lacing. The aroma is fruity with some malt. Light-bodied with a clean palate. Flavors of fruit, malt and a touch of hops and yeast. The finish is kind of thin and lightly bitter. Overall this beer is blown away by the likes of GLBC but it’s ok.

Smells very strong of apple. Bit of crisp hops; mainly apples though. Looks unimpressive. Very clear, light apple juice color, moderate head that disappears quickly. Starts out very appley. Yes, I feel this beer is overdone with apples. That fluffy/doughy yeast strain is all you really taste, I guess there is a touch of peppery hops, maybe tettnang or chinook or something, not much whatever it is. Malt is hardly evident, maybe a touch of honey-like taste. Extremely light bodied, finishes with a sourish yeasty flavor. I've had worse. Carbonation is medium.

Light orange with some deeper hues. Too clear. Has a nice soft yellow/orange head though. Decent malt/hops profile. Opened up with some slightly bitter/acidic malt, a little bit of straw/grainy alcohol flavor and with some hops trailing off as the beer finished. Mildly sweet with a pleasant taste, but too light a body for me to really get into.
