Atwater currently holds true to making traditional German style lagers, along with unique boutique ales. Rieth says, “We’ve analyzed the marketplace and studied what consumers really want in a beer and have successfully provided this for them”. Atwater keeps things fun around the brewery, never taking things too seriously; a favorite slogan around here, “We drink all we can and sell the rest”. Rieth says the company recently became international when beer was shipped to Munich, Germany in a partnership with an all-American craft beer tap house. Today the brewery is thriving and expanding at its original Joseph Campau location, including a full scale Biergarten and Tap House. We recently opened Atwater in the Park which is located 8 miles from the brewery in a renovated church serving unique styles and great food, along with Atwater Spirits and Wine. Atwater in Grand Rapids opened its doors in October 2016 and is located in the renovated Rowe Hotel downtown.

Bottle. Wonderful brew. Amazingly the alcohol was not at all noticeable, at least for such a strong brew. Slight fruit aroma, with nice notes of caramel and plum.

12 oz bottle. Nice IPA aroma, mild to say the least. Taste is very mellow and does not have an overpowering IPA flavor. Personally I really enjoy the strong IPA flavors in many beers, but this one was very refreshing with dinner.

Well, I kind of feel guilty for pairing this poor little fellow with the likes of Goose Island Bourbon County Stout and Deschutes The Abyss, but, let’s be honest. This is a stinker. Hazy light yellow body, thin off-white head. Corny, sweet aroma with grassy hops. Light, watery, corny body, grassy, with honey-like sweetness. A bit cardboardy. Pass.

Sampled on draft at the Rivertowne Pub in North Huntingdon PA - the tap was labeled as ’Dirty Blonde Hefeweizen". The beer poured a cloudy yellow-golden color with a medium sized yellow-white head. The aroma was sweet wheat, citrus and banana. The flavor was sweet wheat with fairly strong notes of banana and clove and a hint of citrus underneath. A nice full bodied hefeweizen.

Average fizzy diminishing head atop a dark brown body. Average aroma of roasted malts, coffee and vanilla and a rubbery smell. Moderately sweet flavor and only lightly bitter. Moderately acidic. Light to medium body that is way overcarbonated. The aftertaste is like pencil lead. Average or a little below.

Pour is a sick looking brown with a small white head. Aroma is in hiding with just some hints of caramel malts sneaking out and not much else. Flavor is a little better. Some malts and a stong bitterness. This is below par just in the fact that it is hard to detect what the brewer was going for here.

Inviting pour with large, fizzy off-white head atop a dark brown body. Aroma of caramel, molasses, straw. Light hops. The flavor is moderately sweet and moderatley acidic. Very light bitterness in the finish. Thin texture, average carbonation. Overall, a crisp, easy-to-drink beer, though nothiing to distinguish itself.

Atwater dunkel weizen on tap at the Mad Mex in Robinson. Big 16 oz glass for $5. Very nice dark brownish hazy pour. Aroma of sweets and root beer along with fermenting fruit, interesting and appealing. Nifty earthly intriguing flavor that reminds me of Corsendonk or Fat Gary. Medium low carbonation that is not tingling but welcomed. Very friendly and well balanced. A decent behaved brew that is easy to enjoy. Cannot detect much, if any bitterness. Overall just a nice repeatable session brew that leaves me feeling happy. Everything about this brew is very acceptable. Would not hesitate to buy this again. Dunkel is one of my favorite styles. On par or slightly better than other good dunkels I’ve had such as Weltenburger Kloster Barock Dunkel, Penn Dark Lager Beer and Warsteiner Premium Dunkel. Better than Harpoon Munich Dark and Saranac Chocolate Amber. I’m not sure why this is not classified as a dunkel weizen.

12 oz bottle poured black and pulled up a decent sized mocha colored head that lasted a while. Initially the aroma was cream soda like but not too strong. Then a nice coffee and burnt malt aroma rose up with some chocolate and a hint of vanilla. The flavors from the first sip were a little too bright. But after a while my taste buds adjusted and a smoothness grew. There is some obvious coffee, chocolate, vanilla and burnt malt flavors. But by some combination of these notes a cream soda flavor is created. That isn’t a taste I care to have in a beer. Fortunately it isn’t too strong. Overall this beer is a bit too sweet for the style but has enough complexity to keep it interesting.

This is easily the best beer that I have had from this brewer. Sampled from a 12 oz brown bottle this beer poured a black color with ruby highlights and a medium sized dark brown head. The aroma is tangy and malty with an undertone of molasses. The flavor is faintly bitter and rather malt with a rich chocolate and molasses element and a floral hop presence. The finish is tangy and hoppy. The alcohol is well hidden. Nice.
