Atwater Brewery owns 1 brewery:
Description
“Founded in 1997, Atwater Block Brewery made its debut in Detroit, Michigan in the historic Rivertown district. The original owner’s reasoning and focus was to bring back the Bohemian style lager that Stroh’s Brewing Company had made famous in the mid 1800’s. The passion for beer started in 1848 when the first mass produced beer was bottled in the Detroit area. So although Detroit is known for being the Motor city, at one time Michigan had more production breweries than anyone in the country. Atwater wanted to re-invent that product back in 1997 of making German style Lagers. The owners purchased a Kasper Schulz, the oldest makers of brewing equipment in the world! It was purchased at a trade show in 1996 and by 1997 Atwater was producing beer!

Atwater currently holds true to making traditional German style lagers, along with unique boutique ales. Rieth says, “We’ve analyzed the marketplace and studied what consumers really want in a beer and have successfully provided this for them”. Atwater keeps things fun around the brewery, never taking things too seriously; a favorite slogan around here, “We drink all we can and sell the rest”. Rieth says the company recently became international when beer was shipped to Munich, Germany in a partnership with an all-American craft beer tap house. Today the brewery is thriving and expanding at its original Joseph Campau location, including a full scale Biergarten and Tap House. We recently opened Atwater in the Park which is located 8 miles from the brewery in a renovated church serving unique styles and great food, along with Atwater Spirits and Wine. Atwater in Grand Rapids opened its doors in October 2016 and is located in the renovated Rowe Hotel downtown.

Dark ruby beer, with a huge, frothy, off-white head that lasts - the aroma is a little metallic and coppery, but there are complex notes of date, raisin, and toffee underneath, as well as a little doughy character - a nice balance of caramel sweetness and an almost coffee-like bitterness - a little bit of raisin and black cherry - the finish gets a little thin and unnecessarily bitter, but it’s still fairly nice - a decent doppel.

Dark ruby beer, with a moderate frothy lace - rather bland aroma of artificial vanilla, odd tartness, and some roasty notes - thin-bodied and flavored - mild vanilla and weak-ass coffee - some ash/tobacco - not much else - blah.

Nice crystal clear coloured golden body with a super dense (meaning HUGE) white head. Aroma of fresh citrus hops, apples, malt, corn, apricots and even more hops. Medium-bodied; Strong hoppy flavour up front with a good citrus and piney taste mellowing out with some malt near the end. Aftertaste shows the bitter hops, with a bit of an alcoholic kick. Overall, a good IPA, not amazing - but a good offering from a local Detroit brewery! I sampled this twelve ounce bottle purchased yesterday from Chevy Chase Wine & Liquors in Washington, D.C. on 04-May-2008.

12oz bottle. Golden straw colored blonde beer, with a rich foamy head. Heavy citrus aroma. Light and refreshing as an English IPA, but with the American signature Cascade hop profile. Creamy and sweet. A well done American IPA.

Good lord, this is a gusher. Bottle from Degarth. Pours a slighly hazy peach color with a head of epic proportions. Retention is also epic. Will I ever get to drink this? Good lord, I just noticed I still have two thirds in the bottle! See you in half an hour! Well, that was really only like 25 minutes, and once all the head on the sides of the bottle condenses I’ll probably have another sip or two. Aroma is honey-ish with a floral hop profile. Smells really nice to be but that might be because I’m freaking thirsty by now. Major citrus... kind of like eating a grapefruit. The honey-like sweetness is in the taste as well. Thin mouthfeel and the aftertaste is a bit too bitter. A little bit off balance.

Bottle. Golden beer with a huge (and I mean monstrous) off-white head. Grassy, straw, hay aroma. Malt, light lemon, grass flavor. Medium body. Light grass and malt lingering. Easy drinking, standard pils.

Nice deep dark brown coloured body with soda-like bubbles and a thinnish fast-fading brown head. Aroma of strong metal, blood, vinegar, grapes, roasted malt and a meaty funkiness. Medium-bodied; Very effervescent nuttiness coupled with malt and a bit of interesting grape tastes found. Aftertaste shows a bit more complex taste with mushrooms, toffee and an overriding oaky and vanilla taste. Overall, a strong flavoured interesting tasting beer that doesn’t show enough porter to be good. I sampled this twelve ounce bottle purchased from Merchant’s in Dearborn, Michigan on 25-February2008.

Thanks to nearbeer for the bottle! The body is a cherry mahogany color that makes a thin soapy head of mocha. Caramel and molasses nose. Spritzy palate, the flavor is lightly sweet, no hop bitterness. Simple and easy to drink.

Pours a deep golden color with a medium ivory colored head that dissipates steadily. Spotty lacing. Light pine and citrusy hops in the nose. Light-bodied and crisp with mildly bitter hops and citrus flavors. Some pale malt is present as well. The finish is short and mildly bitter with a light hoppy aftertaste. Overall this is a one-dimensional IPA that I would not bother with again.

Sample at Gallo’s Taproom in Columbus. Pours dark brown with red around the edges. Thin and creamy beige head that dissipates quickly, and spotty lacing. Aroma of sweet malt and dark fruit. Medium-bodied with flavors of caramel malt and toasted nuts, plus some hops. ABV is well-masked. The finish is mildly roasty with a grainy malt aftertaste. Just average overall.
