Atwater currently holds true to making traditional German style lagers, along with unique boutique ales. Rieth says, “We’ve analyzed the marketplace and studied what consumers really want in a beer and have successfully provided this for them”. Atwater keeps things fun around the brewery, never taking things too seriously; a favorite slogan around here, “We drink all we can and sell the rest”. Rieth says the company recently became international when beer was shipped to Munich, Germany in a partnership with an all-American craft beer tap house. Today the brewery is thriving and expanding at its original Joseph Campau location, including a full scale Biergarten and Tap House. We recently opened Atwater in the Park which is located 8 miles from the brewery in a renovated church serving unique styles and great food, along with Atwater Spirits and Wine. Atwater in Grand Rapids opened its doors in October 2016 and is located in the renovated Rowe Hotel downtown.

Pour is black with a average tan head. Aroma has a nice roastness to it but not much else. Flavor is super sour! Some bitter chocolate shows up but the sourness gets in the way. Why is this so sour? Not real good pass when you see this one.

Sampled from a 12 oz brown bottle this beer poured a black color with a huge dark brown head. The aroma was sour, roasty malts with only a faint hint of vanilla and no coffee. The mouthfeel was smooth and creamy. The flavor was roasty, toasty and bitter with a hint of vanilla on the finish. Absolutely no coffee flavor. Fairly boring really.

Pour is a copper with a white head. Aroma is faint but hops are present. Flavor is much the same. Some small amount of hops and not much of a stong malt. Pretty poor for an IPA.

Pour is a very dark red-brown with a small tan head. Aroma is dark fruits and some molasses. Flavor is super sugar sweet! My teeth hurt after a drink of this. Some dark fruit and molasses are in the flavor but the sugar overpowers all. Alcohol is not a problem. Not much in the flavor but worth a try. Maybe someone who is a fan of this style would like this more.

Hazy orange body, medium off-white head. Sweet aroma with strong notes of honey. Strongly carbonated body with honey, light fruits, biscuit, and warming alcohol. Sharp bitter finish. The body is sweet but I find the most dominant characteristic to be the lingering, potent finish, which becomes a bit too much after a few sips.

Deep brown body, thick buff head. Toasty aroma with layered burnt caramels and breads, alcohol. Sweet body, brown sugar, toast, raisins, and warming alcohol presence. Bitter finish. Too sugary, the unfermented sugars obscuring any layering of the different components. Instead, it’s a rather brief swirl of flavors. If Atwater worked at sharpening the palate and reducing the amount of unfermented sugars, this would be a better beer.

Purchased at 3 sons dogs and suds in wexford. $3 per bottle. Bready aroma. Very dark in my steeler mug. Initial taste is a slam of what seems to be an onslaught of big bitter hops....but it does not turn out that way. Nice dark flavor and the finish, tho malty, is not too bitter. Does not linger. Be careful with this one, it is so smooth you’d never know it was 9+%. I don’t see how it could be.

Pours a clear and dark copper color with a medium thin light tan head. Thin, spotty lacing. Aroma of sweet malt and sour fruit. Medium-bodied and much more tart than most Viennas. Tart/sour fruit overpowers the toasted malt and caramel flavors. Still, I was able to drink it. The beer either does not translate well, or is actually trying to be more like a Flemish Sour. The finish is fruity and tart, with a hint of vinegar. Below average, no matter what the reason it tastes like it does.

Sampled from a 12 oz brown bottle this beer poured a red-amber color with a small yellow head. The aroma was lightly malty and vaguely vegetal. The flavor was bitter, tangy and vinegary with a bitter finish. Pretty blah.

Has the aroma of a milk or oatmeal sweet stout. You do get the vanilla and some coffee immediately on the sip. Very dark, good fizzyness, but not lively. Nicely creamy on the tounge and palate. Finish is a teeny weeny bit bitter, but does not last.
