Atwater currently holds true to making traditional German style lagers, along with unique boutique ales. Rieth says, “We’ve analyzed the marketplace and studied what consumers really want in a beer and have successfully provided this for them”. Atwater keeps things fun around the brewery, never taking things too seriously; a favorite slogan around here, “We drink all we can and sell the rest”. Rieth says the company recently became international when beer was shipped to Munich, Germany in a partnership with an all-American craft beer tap house. Today the brewery is thriving and expanding at its original Joseph Campau location, including a full scale Biergarten and Tap House. We recently opened Atwater in the Park which is located 8 miles from the brewery in a renovated church serving unique styles and great food, along with Atwater Spirits and Wine. Atwater in Grand Rapids opened its doors in October 2016 and is located in the renovated Rowe Hotel downtown.

12 ounce can from Woodman's Sun Prairie, 5/30/21. Very hazy orange, large frothy tan head, good retention. Aroma of artificial tropical fruit, pale malt, fruity pebbles cereal. Taste is pixie sticks candy, tropical fruit, pale malt. Thin, low bitterness. Doesn't seem artificial per se but it is candy-ish. Meh.

Panda at home, thanks to SHIG, 30/12/20. Light black with a moderate tan cap that dissipates edgeward. Nose is toffee apple, cocoa sprinkle, faint coffee, dark malts. Taste comprises dried fruits, dark malts, brown sugar dusting, toffee, tangy fruit esters. Full bodied, fine carbonation, semi drying close. So so affair ... not much coffee on show here!

12oz can. Atwater has always kind of sucked, and now they are crafty to boot. I'd have to imagine this one was made at Molson-Coors. Bland and inoffensive, the extract doesn't really jump out at you. For a flavored IPA, it is pretty tolerable. Bland, malty IPA backdrop.

Bottle from Livonia Liquor. Pours a deep brown to black with a finger of brown head that dissipates quickly. Dark chocolate, cacao nib, cola and light bourbon aromas on the nose. Some charred malt and slightly astringent flavors on the palate that are kind of off-putting. Roasted cacao nib and more burned coffee with some barrel as it warms.
