Atwater currently holds true to making traditional German style lagers, along with unique boutique ales. Rieth says, “We’ve analyzed the marketplace and studied what consumers really want in a beer and have successfully provided this for them”. Atwater keeps things fun around the brewery, never taking things too seriously; a favorite slogan around here, “We drink all we can and sell the rest”. Rieth says the company recently became international when beer was shipped to Munich, Germany in a partnership with an all-American craft beer tap house. Today the brewery is thriving and expanding at its original Joseph Campau location, including a full scale Biergarten and Tap House. We recently opened Atwater in the Park which is located 8 miles from the brewery in a renovated church serving unique styles and great food, along with Atwater Spirits and Wine. Atwater in Grand Rapids opened its doors in October 2016 and is located in the renovated Rowe Hotel downtown.

Different from the old vanilla java? Who knows. Tap at bowsers. Darker brown, lots of vanilla in the nose, almost like cream soda. Taste is alarming over the top vanilla. Lots of sweetness in there almost artificial in nature. Very little beer flavor in this one. Actually becomes medicinal and bitter in the end. Not too enjoyable.

12 ounce bottle into tulip glass, bottled in 1/2018. Pours slightly hazy medium orange/amber color with a 2 finger dense and rocky off white head with great retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lasts. Thick soapy lacing clings on the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation. Fantastic appearance. Aromas of grapefruit, tangerine, peach, pineapple, apricot, mango, melon, lemon zest, orange peel, light pepper/pine, light caramel, toasted bread, herbal, and floral/grassy earthiness. Nice and pleasant aromas with good balance and complexity of citrus/fruity hops and moderate bready malt notes; with solid strength. Taste of grapefruit, tangerine, peach, pineapple, apricot, mango, melon, lemon zest, orange peel, light pepper/pine, light caramel, toasted bread, herbal, and floral/grassy earthiness. Mild pine, citrus peel, herbal, grassy bitterness on the finish. Lingering notes of grapefruit, tangerine, peach, pineapple, apricot, mango, melon, lemon zest, orange peel, light pepper/pine, light caramel, toasted bread, and herbal/floral/grassy earthiness on the finish for a while. Nice complexity, robustness, and balance of citrus/fruity hops and moderate bready malt flavors; with a great malt/bitterness balance, and zero cloying/astringent flavors after the finish. Lightly increasing dryness from lingering bitterness. Medium carbonation and body; with a very smooth, moderately bready/grainy, and fairly sticky balanced mouthfeel that is nice. Zero warming alcohol for 7%. Overall this is a nice low IBU IPA. All around good complexity, robustness, and balance of citrus/fruity hops and moderate bready malt flavors; very smooth and easy to drink with the very mildly bitter/drying finish. Pretty unique and interesting, almost feels like an ESB with American hops. Possibly Centennial and Amarillo. Fairly juicy and lightly dank hop complexity, balanced bready malts; and just enough bitterness to balance sweetness. A nicely enjoyable offering.

Sampled from a 12 oz brown bottle this beer poured a black color with a medium sized foamy brown head that lingered and left decent lacing. The aroma was dry with mint and chocolate. The flavor was bitter and roasty with cocoa powder and mint. Long finish with lingering mint. Medium body. Decent.

Tap bowsers. Root-beer brown eye. Flat. Is this a brown ale? Not sher. More like a flavored stout or porter, if you think about it. Taste is a little disappointing. Slight mint cookie and perhaps, if you look for it, some dark chocolate, but don't think this is sweet chocolate mint. Nothing like those girl scout cookies, heheh. Does not hide alky well. Medicinal in the middle. Yes, not as described, but still, can drink it. JMHO. Its a little better than an impy stout - fer sher.

bottle - Very dark brown pour. The mild aroma is mainly roast malt. I'm not really noticing the cherries. The flavor is sweet and roasty with a little bit of cherry and chocolate. It's okay but kind of underwhelming.

12 ounce bottle. Amber copper pour. Large rocky beige head. Subtle doughy, spicy nose. Toasted malt flavor has notes of cinnamon, ginger and allspice. Some peppery bitterness in finish. The holiday spices are subdued, making this an enjoyable alternative to so many Christmas spice bombs.
