Atwater currently holds true to making traditional German style lagers, along with unique boutique ales. Rieth says, “We’ve analyzed the marketplace and studied what consumers really want in a beer and have successfully provided this for them”. Atwater keeps things fun around the brewery, never taking things too seriously; a favorite slogan around here, “We drink all we can and sell the rest”. Rieth says the company recently became international when beer was shipped to Munich, Germany in a partnership with an all-American craft beer tap house. Today the brewery is thriving and expanding at its original Joseph Campau location, including a full scale Biergarten and Tap House. We recently opened Atwater in the Park which is located 8 miles from the brewery in a renovated church serving unique styles and great food, along with Atwater Spirits and Wine. Atwater in Grand Rapids opened its doors in October 2016 and is located in the renovated Rowe Hotel downtown.

Shared bottle, in snifters. Looks like a typical imperial stout, but that is the only typical trait. Cranberry juices dominates but lends to a thin palate. Just hints of bourbon, chocolate, et al.

Sampled on draft at Tapped this beer poured a golden amber color with a large foamy yellow-white head that rose over the glass, lingered and left decent lacing. The aroma was dryish, earthy and citric. The flavor was sweet and tangy with tropical fruit and moderate astringency. Long finish. Medium body. Ok.

12 ounce bottle into weizen glass, bottled on 11/18/2016. Pours hazy deep reddish copper/light brown color with a 1-2 finger fairly dense and fluffy light khaki head with great retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lasts. Nice spotty soapy lacing clings down the glass, with a moderate amount of streaming carbonation retaining the cap. Aromas of big raisin, plum, peach, pear, apricot, red apple, banana, bubblegum, clove, caramel, brown sugar, toffee, brown bread, toasted biscuit, light nuttiness/roast, herbal, grass, and yeast/toasted earthiness. Damn nice aromas with great balance and complexity of fruity/spicy yeast and dark/bready malt notes; with great strength. Taste of huge raisin, plum, peach, pear, apricot, red apple, banana, bubblegum, clove, caramel, brown sugar, toffee, brown bread, toasted biscuit, light nuttiness/roast, herbal, grass, and yeast/toasted earthiness. Light herbal bitterness and yeast spiciness on the finish. Lingering notes of rfaisin, plum, peach, pear, apricot, red apple, banana, bubblegum, clove, caramel, brown sugar, toffee, brown bread, toasted biscuit, light nuttiness/roast, herbal, grass, and yeast/toasted earthiness on the finish for a while. Incredible complexity, robustness, and balance of fruity/spicy yeast and dark/bready malt flavors; with a nice malt/bitter/spiciness balance, and zero cloying sweetness after the finish. Minimal dryness. Medium-high carbonation and fairly full body; with a very smooth, creamy, bready, silky, and rich mouthfeel that is awesome. Minimal warming alcohol for 10.5%. Overall this is a fantastic weizenbock! All around outstanding complexity, robustness, and balance of fruity/spicy yeast and dark/bready malt flavors; very smooth and dangerously easy to drink for the huge ABV. Very rich with perfectly balanced yeast and malt complexity. Just as great as most classic German versions(though higher on ABV). A highly enjoyable offering, and pristine style example.

12 oz bottle from a grocery store in Upper Michigan. This bottle reads 5% ABV. Aroma is strong in vanilla, chocolate, coffee; roasty, hint of licorice. Pours dark dark brown to black with a one finger beige head that falls into a ring after a minute; leaves a bit of lace. Taste is sweet and roasty, finishing with a slightly dry bitterness; flavors are chocolate, vanilla, coffee, wet stone. This is really good. I don’t understand the low scores for this. I can’t find anything wrong with it.

This beer is a clear pale golden-orange color with a thick gushing white head that makes me suspect the age of the bottle. Spotty lace. Malt, fruit and yeast aroma. Light-bodied with flavors of earthy malt, fruit and slight grassy hop. The finish is grainy malt and fruit. Below average overall.

Pours crystal clear medium orange/amber color with a 2 finger dense and rocky off white head with fantastic retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lasts. Nice dense soapy lacing clings around the glass. Fantastic appearance. Aromas of big grapefruit, tangerine, pineapple, peach, lemon zest, orange peel, pine, light caramel, toasted bread, and floral/grassy earthiness. Very nice aromas with good balance and complexity of citrus/pine hops and moderate bready malt notes; with great strength. Taste of big grapefruit, tangerine, pineapple, peach, lemon zest, orange peel, pine, light caramel, toasted bread, and floral/grassy earthiness. Moderate pine/citrus peel/grassy bitterness on the finish. Lingering notes of grapefruit, tangerine, pineapple, peach, lemon/orange peel, citrus rind, pine, toasted bread, and floral/grassy earthiness on the finish for a while. Great complexity, robustness, and balance of citrus/pine hops and moderate bready malt flavors; with a great malt/bitterness balance, and zero lingering hop astringency after the finish. Light-moderate dryness from bitterness, increasing though the glass. Medium carbonation and body; with a very smooth, moderately bready/grainy/sticky, and lightly resinous/rindy balance mouthfeel that is great. Zero warming alcohol for 6.5%. Overall this is a delicious IPA. All around nice complexity, robustness, and balance of citrus/pine hops and moderate bready malt flavors; very smooth and easy to drink with the modestly bitter/dryness finish. Great juicy hop vibrancy and nice malt backbone, with no residual sweetness. A really enjoyable offering, and very classic tasting IPA.
