Atwater Brewery owns 1 brewery:
Description
“Founded in 1997, Atwater Block Brewery made its debut in Detroit, Michigan in the historic Rivertown district. The original owner’s reasoning and focus was to bring back the Bohemian style lager that Stroh’s Brewing Company had made famous in the mid 1800’s. The passion for beer started in 1848 when the first mass produced beer was bottled in the Detroit area. So although Detroit is known for being the Motor city, at one time Michigan had more production breweries than anyone in the country. Atwater wanted to re-invent that product back in 1997 of making German style Lagers. The owners purchased a Kasper Schulz, the oldest makers of brewing equipment in the world! It was purchased at a trade show in 1996 and by 1997 Atwater was producing beer!

Atwater currently holds true to making traditional German style lagers, along with unique boutique ales. Rieth says, “We’ve analyzed the marketplace and studied what consumers really want in a beer and have successfully provided this for them”. Atwater keeps things fun around the brewery, never taking things too seriously; a favorite slogan around here, “We drink all we can and sell the rest”. Rieth says the company recently became international when beer was shipped to Munich, Germany in a partnership with an all-American craft beer tap house. Today the brewery is thriving and expanding at its original Joseph Campau location, including a full scale Biergarten and Tap House. We recently opened Atwater in the Park which is located 8 miles from the brewery in a renovated church serving unique styles and great food, along with Atwater Spirits and Wine. Atwater in Grand Rapids opened its doors in October 2016 and is located in the renovated Rowe Hotel downtown.

Reviewed from notes.
The appearance was a dark brown color with a fizzy light tan head that left no lace.
The aroma had some sweet meat, light wood, super sweet cherry. Delicate roast in the background.
The flavor was semi-sweet through the previously mentioned aromas. Some toast entered in for a gentle blend. Mild sweet meaty sort of aftertaste. A trying sort of finish and I mean one that seemed to disintegrate what the entire flavor tried to present. It’s \"tired\" as it puts a little bit of sour in the finish and not very welcoming.
The feel was between light and medium on the body, leaning more towards light. Sessionable? Well, with that sour unwelcoming finish, that distracted me a bit and it was hard to take down the rest of this beer.
Overall, sometimes Atwater is on, and sometimes they’re off. This would be one of their off beers to me.

Thanks Mike.
This was poured into a lager glass.
The appearance was a ruddy burnt amber color with a finger and a half’s worth of white foamy head that fell off at a moderate pace. Light lace.
The aroma centered around a nice dose of sweet black cherries, bready malts, earthy to grassy hops, some baked apples, light leather, sweet cereal grains, toast, biscuits and some red cherry jam.
The flavor leaned into the sweetness of the previously mentioned aromas. Light butterscotch and some woodiness entered for an even nicer arrangement flowing freely into the aftertaste and following extremely nice into the finish.
The feel was roughly medium bodied with a fabulous sipping quality about it. Carbonation felt on par with an ABV that felt just as good.
Overall, really nice doppelbock preferably wanting more around Winter. Slightly jealous Michiganders get this every Winter as we don’t have amazing doppelbocks in Vermont.

12 ounce bottle into lager glass, bottled on 10/12/2016. Pours fairly crystal clear medium golden/yellow color with a 1 finger dense white head with good retention, that reduces to a thin cap that lingers. Light spotty lacing clings down the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation retaining the cap. Aromas of lemon, pear, apple, cracker, biscuit, light honey, herbal, floral, grass, light pepper, and yeast earthiness. Nice and pleasant aromas with good balance of pale malt and light-moderate earthy hop notes; with solid strength. A bit fruity/yeasty, but not overwhelming. Taste of lemon, pear, apple, cracker, biscuit, light honey, herbal, light pepper, and floral/grassy earthiness. Light herbal/spicy bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of cracker, biscuit, light honey, herbal, light pepper, and floral/grassy earthiness for a good bit. Nice robustness and balance of pale malt and light-moderate earthy hop flavors; with a great malt/bitterness balance, and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Light dryness from bitterness, lightly increasing through the glass. Fairly clean on lager flavors; light yeasty notes present, but not overwhelming. Medium carbonation and light-medium body; with a very smooth, moderately crisp/grainy/bready, and slightly sticky mouthfeel that is nice. Zero warming alcohol as expected of 4.9%. Overall this is a good Helles. All around good robustness and balance of pale malt and light-moderate earthy hop flavors; very smooth, crisp, clean, and refreshing to drink. Very good example of the style, just wish it was a little cleaner/less fruity on the yeast. A nicely enjoyable offering.

12 ounce bottle. Translucent reddish brown color. Large pillowy light tan head. Sweet toasted malt aroma is redolent of milk chocolate. Slightly sweet cocoa flavor upfront. Roasted malt, cashews, toasted bread and chocolate wafers follow. Spicy notes in middle. Sticky malt finish. Medium bodied, yet only average complexity.

Nice pour, but the texture is surprisingly thin, in dire need of some thickness and more carbonation. Smells like a big glass o’ chocolate, though, which is a plus. Taste...needs help, artificial cocoa flavor on top of a yeasty English brown ale, not sweet but false, with a really unpleasant tartness on the back end. Not good.

Shared 12 oz. bottle. Pours dark brown with a light beige head. Very chocolatey aroma. Taste is dark chocolate, dark malts, nuts, vanilla notes, sugary. Very sweet and chocolatey. Almost like chocolate milk or a chocolate shake - well, a very thin chocolate shake. Probably the most chocolatey beer I’ve had, but overall, it’s too sweet and sugary.

12oz bottle. Unfiltered copper-orange body with lots of coagulated artificial additive stuff at the bottom. Steady attractive off-white head. Thick and yeasty, in no way a session beer. This is a bad fruit beer. Really not capturing any essence of a Session IPA. Mild distant soapy hops. Murky. Weak offering.

Hazy deep amber and muddied brown coloured body with a thinnish, single centimetre tall tan head. Aroma of light grain, a touch of caramel and very little else. Medium-bodied; Assertive malt and grainy flavours with some earth, caramel, toffee, light hops and smooth nutty flavours. Finishes with some fruits, earth, alcohol, caramel and mellow cereal and no real complexities. Overall, a fairly subdued beer all around with only a handful of flavours noticeable throughout the entire beer and more of an earthy and biting malt than anything else - not really enjoyable. Not worth grabbing when there are other options in Michigan and not worth lugging anywhere far, either. I sampled this twelve ounce bottle purchased from Merchant’s in Dearborn, Michigan on 10-December-2016 for US$2,39 sampled at home in Washington on 29-January-2017.
