Atwater currently holds true to making traditional German style lagers, along with unique boutique ales. Rieth says, “We’ve analyzed the marketplace and studied what consumers really want in a beer and have successfully provided this for them”. Atwater keeps things fun around the brewery, never taking things too seriously; a favorite slogan around here, “We drink all we can and sell the rest”. Rieth says the company recently became international when beer was shipped to Munich, Germany in a partnership with an all-American craft beer tap house. Today the brewery is thriving and expanding at its original Joseph Campau location, including a full scale Biergarten and Tap House. We recently opened Atwater in the Park which is located 8 miles from the brewery in a renovated church serving unique styles and great food, along with Atwater Spirits and Wine. Atwater in Grand Rapids opened its doors in October 2016 and is located in the renovated Rowe Hotel downtown.

I liked this one a lot more than I expected to. +++ Sampled on draft at 3R6P this beer poured a very dark brown color with a medium sized foamy beige head that left decent lacing. The aroma was sweet blueberry muffin. The flavor was blueberry muffin, sweet and yeasty with toasty malts and vanilla. As it warmed notes of chocolate and raisin came out. Long finish. Moderately full bodied. Alcohol well controlled. Well done.

(bottle, 35.5cl) Cloudy, orange-golden colour with a short and slightly off-white foamy head. Moderately fruity hoppy aroma with notes of citrus, grapefruit, as well as some flowery accents; honey-ish malty background. Dry and mildly bready malty taste with hoppy notes of grapefruit and a tinge of pine needles; dry, slightly mineralic and pine-spicy hoppy finish. 20.VI.16

Bottle. Orange color with small white head. Aroma is piney, tangerines, orange peel. Taste is slightly oxidized, piney, bitter finish, carbonation. Bottle was probably a bit too old, close to its BB date. Still ok.

Hazy amber with almost no head. Aroma is orange peel, with more sugars and grass. Taste is orange-y bitterness/sourness and little malty sweetness. Quite harsh bitterness. Easy to drink but the finish is sour and bitter as well. Too harsh for me. Overall still ok.

Slightly hazy amber, orange, light brown with little white head. Aroma is pine cone, orange, fresh grassy hops. Taste is bitter hoppyness, with some more bitter sour fruits. A little too bitter for me. But still nice. Long dry finish with also more sourness. Not much carbonation. Not so easy to drink. Overall good.
