Description
In late 2013, J.C. Hill got a call from his father, John, asking if he’d like to open a brewery restaurant in Monterey. The opportunity to collaborate on a project with his father and move home to Northern California to start a family with his wife, Melanie, could not be ignored and thus he moved. Located in a historically registered building in Old Monterey, this is our original location that opened in 2014. The Alvarado Street Brewery & Grill serves locally sourced, gastropub-influenced fare built around it's beers that are produced on-site.

In April of 2016 our Salinas Production Brewery & taproom opened to supplement house offerings at our downtown Monterey pub, and allow us to supply draft beer to quality minded local establishments.

Poured from a 16 oz can dated March 05, 2025.
Aroma is adjunct forward with lots of vanilla and cacao. Moderate malt notes with chocolate and lighter notes of roast, caramel and toffee. Light alcohol notes.
Pours black with a medium large, thick mocha head that recedes steadily to a small film that lingers on the edges. Light lacing and moderately long legs.
Flavor is rather sweet with lots of chocolate malt notes and lighter roast, caramel and toffee notes. Lots of cacao and lighter vanilla. Medium bitterness and medium alcohol notes.
Mouthfeel is full bodied with medium carbonation. Low astringency and medium low alcohol warmth.
Overall, a solid imperial stout. I haven't had a non barrel aged one in a while, but this is nice. Nice adjunct notes especially in the aroma. Alcohol is well hidden.

16 oz. can, pours a clear pale golden with a small white head. Aroma sure brings out the Riwaka, with tons of white wine, melon, and piney hops. Flavour is bright, biting and tangy, with white wine tang, piney hops, some melon, and crisp biscuity malt. Perhaps the taste isn’t quite as invigorating as the nose, but damn that’s a nice construction.

16 oz. can, pours a clear golden with a medium white head. Aroma has bright piney hops, some resinous hop oils, light tropical melon, and a thin biscuity malt base. Flavour is much the same, bursting with bright piney, citrusy hops, tropical melon, and a surprisingly thin biscuity malt base for a IIIPA. Ridiculously well-balanced, more of a blonde IPA with a wonderfully vibrant hop expression. Wonderful.

473mL can. Pours clear gold with a white head. Pine, sweet malts, and yuzu on the nose. Flavour is jammed full of hops, bright pine, yuzu, melon; sweet malts. Very well-balanced, strong hop flavours and a reasonably thick body. This is excellent.

Pint can pours with an opaque gold body that has wafer thin coppers hues and supporting an off white head of foam. The aroma offers up sugary mango cotton candy and orange sherbet and deeper in it gets into guava and cantaloupe. The taste delivers soft sweet mango and guava that builds into some sugary orange sherbet. This attains timid citrus hop tanginess. It is really ruled by soft sweetness that just doesn't let up. Ended up too sweet to finish.
