Description

Bottle from a supermarket in Dalfsen. Aroma is malt, caramel, dried fruits, yeast, and raisins with a touch of candy sugar, which I generally don’t like in my beer but found harmless here. Flavour is fairly sweet with a decent light to moderate bitterness in the finish. Body is medium. Not a bad drinkable Dubbel, I’ve had way worse in this style.

Bottle from a supermarket in Dalfsen. Aroma is darkish malt, caramel, spices, cinnamon, touch of nutmeg, candy sugar, with a hint of chocolate. Flavour is sweet and light bitter. Body is above medium. Lacks the complexity of a good Quad but this is not bad at all, has some smoothness, decent aroma.

05-01-16 // bottle from Euro Secre Santa 2016. Thanks RW80! Pours a very murky blond beer, small head. Nose is light sweet malty. Taste is medium sweet, light malty, light grains, light bitter hops. Also a light fruity touch. Quite a nice blond.

Bottle shared by Craftmember, cheers mate! Moussy, off-white, very lightly lacing but thin and loose, quickly dissolving head, hazy coppery bronze robe with burgundy hue. Aroma of pure caramel, candied date, some wet dog here and there, burnt brown sugar, dark bitter honey, soggy brown bread, plum wine, dry earth, pear peel but overripe pear as well, sugared tea, frangipane, fig, something subtly glue-ish. Sweetish, caramelly onset, lots of residual brown sugar slickness but nowhere overly cloying, some candied date and dried banana, deep and dim sourishness indeed very reminiscent of spelt, paired with a more rounded, caramelly body carrying both sticky candi sugar sweetness and deeper spelt sourishness onwards to a gently spicy, phenolic, bit herbal finish, drying and not unpleasant but not at all interfering with an ongoing flow of almost sticky, brown sugar- and dark malt-like sweetishness. I think I can see the point of trying to corkscrew both ’brown’ sweetness and sourish spelt ’wryness’ into one beer and this one probably does that right, but however correct this may be, I am not the greatest fan of specialty grains in beer (especially spelt) and this one just did not conquer me like it could have. All things considered: very decent, interesting Dutch craft ale, certainly, but a bit cliché and, frankly, boring.

Shared by Craftmember, cheers! Multi-grain beer occasionally made for archeological excavations in Dalfsen. Very violent gusher, we lost 1/3 of the bottle upon even careful opening. Very thick and rocky, creamy, tightly papery lacing, bubbly head, pale yellow beige in colour; dark chestnut brown robe with bronze hue, cloudy. Aroma of moldy walnut shells, soggy spelt bread, caramel, fenugreek seed, dry earth, tree leaves, cocoa powder, ginger, fresh fig, dried plum, herb cheese, tawny port, redcurrant, toast. Evidently very spritzy onset, lots of dried fruit, raisin, dried blue prunes, only very subduedly sweetish, deeply situated sourishness not unlike dried blueberry but more ’dim’, some subtle apple peel touch, carbonation settling down after a while resulting in a softer, more rounded mouthfeel. Spicy spelt and subtly sweetish oat are clearly represented in the middle, embedded in a soft, round, toffeeish and pleasantly bready barley malt sweetness. Sourish aspects keep lingering at the back, probably mostly due to the spelt, along with spicy phenolic accents and a dash of herbal, earthy hop bitterness. Too bad for the rather dramatic and uncontrollable gushing (and initial overcarbonation resulting from it), but in itself a correct and balanced beer.
