Description
The brewery is located in the picturesque village of Kötschach-Mauthen, Gailtal, Carinthia and derives its name from the old celtic name of Mauthen. Wonderful freshly brewed beer is celebrated here, with its own source, the best raw materials and a lot of love for the product. The brewhouse is modern and state of the art, the beer is traditionally fermented in the open fermentation tank. We are Gailtal's first brewery and have continued the craft that was practiced in Mauthen in 1700. Since opening in 2007, the brewery has been continuously expanded and the range expanded. Far from the mass products of the corporations, artisanal beer is produced here.

Golden-amber in color with a three-finger head. Aroma was biscuit, grains and bread. Taste was also biscuit, grains, and bread, leans to the malty side.

Bottle drunk at the end of summer, just around its expiration, ideal time for a winter beer right? Murky brown. Carbonation close to zero. Nose: roasty slight-cardboardy scents and some citrusy hops/spices. Actually not gone too bad in taste, like a vanilla-cinnamon candle and mulled wine lemon juice, pretty big and smooth bitterness, not too sweet. Honestly I'd suggest a shorter expiration just to get it off store shelves before summer.

Can. Hazy yellow color with medium white head. Aroma of tropical fruits, mango, papaya, oranges, zest. Taste is juicy hoppy with mango, papaya, oranges, tangerines, light apricots, zest. Good NEIPA. For me could be there more hoppy bitterness.

Bottle drunk on our last night in St. Johann im Pongau, after spicy pizza and alcohol-free tiramisu. Orange amber hazy, small head, very fresh grain/malt nose. Nice full caramel taste, but not too sweet. Big flavor like munching on some lightly roasted malt, very clean with smooth bitterness. Great beer.

Can from ADEG Hermagor, drunk in Pongau after traversing the half of Lichtensteiner Klamm that's not still closed due to rockfall. Mostly clear gold, huge sea foamy head, nose of stone fruit and sweet citrus. Flavor is lightly tropical-fruity and very refreshing. The beer has moderate but smooth bitterness with a backbone of malt fullness. This is really an excellent hopped Helles! There should be more lagers that taste like this, extra point for that.

Bottle from ADEG drunk after a thunderstorm while reading a silly, pun-riddled, low-brow fantasy novel Split Heirs that my Mom plucked from a book fair pile. Dark brown, tan head, very roasted nose with hints of sweetness. Very full body, a bit too sweet even, slightly metallic tang. Could use more bitterness to balance that lactose.

Can drunk in our Ferienwohnung in St. Johann im Pongau. Clear gold, slight lemony aroma. Flavor is smooth and soft, lemon notes and a bit of acidity. I'm trying to find the rosemary but it's a very faint waft of herbal tone, maybe overpowered by the herbs de provence on our salmon. Which goes well with the beer as promised on the can. Nice one.
