Description
Hawkstone is the brainchild of Jeremy Clarkson and Rick and Emma from the Cotswold Brew Co. Having put blood, sweat and tears into cultivating his malting barley, Jeremy was determined that it be put to good use, so resolved to supply it directly to a local brewery to turn into lager. He was introduced to Rick and Emma from the Cotswold Brewery by the landlord at their local and they hit it off immediately. Like Jeremy, they’re committed to supporting local agriculture but they’re not just good people, they’re also excellent brewers. They created Hawkstone Lager - a brew of such exquisite quality that Jeremy decided to invest.

330ml bottle from Hampers Food & Wine, Woodstock] Pours deep amber with a slightly dirty looking foamy off-white head. Moderate carbonation, but not too intrusive by lager standards. Smells of dusty chocolate. Initial flavour of chocolate develops through autumn leaves into bitterness with slight metallics. Quite a short finish. Overall an OK beer, but not one I’d especially return to.

On tap on the Saturday of the Cheltenham National Cheese Festival. Poured a light golden colour with a slim white head. Clean and refreshing and at such a reasonably weak strength this could be quite gluggable, but I’m not sure that it would have enough to keep me enticed. It was more flavoursome than many of rivals in this sector but it lacked a real depth of flavour though as Doppelganger states such coldness can hide some of the hoppier characteristics which are definately there but just hidden somewhat. Absolutely fine.

Had this at the National Cheese Festival, Montpellier, Cheltenham, 30-09-06. A light golden appearance, very crisp and refreshing with hoppy notes and some citrus tangs to it, quite dry and all in all not bad at all.
